I believe the straight tip is simply a type of cap previously, hence the listing of Alden's straight tips under TSM's Cap toe category.  Straight tips are probably a simple cap line without broguing.

[/quote]RTP, your definition seems to me as the obvious answer, though I am withholding my decision pending an expert opinion from our esteemed Uncle.

As long as we're into the categorization of shoe types...
How about where there is no actual cap and there's just a line or two of stitching across the toe?
I think those are usually referred to as straight tips as well.

I've been going on the assumption that they are all variations on a cap toe

I am in agreement with rtp that the general classification of cap toe includes the subdivision such as cap toe bal, medallion cap toe, perforated cap toe, straight tip blucher, cap toe bal etc
also, I am not the oracle of delphi

Has anyone ordered the cap-toe boot from TSM lately?  Ordered the 4060 last night in #8 and just got a cancellation saying the style is being discontinued and they were out of stock in my size.  Is this a canned response for the  online inventory wasn't updated?

Ordered this one at the beginning of June and had no problems. If Alden is discontinuing the captoe on the grant last you can always get the one from J.Crew on the barrie. What size were you attempting to get?

This may be a stupid question, but is there any difference between a straight tip and a captoe? I've seen the term used interchangeably several times. Unless you're referring to a punched captoe or something with a medallion, it seems like a straight tip and a captoe are the same thing.
I may be wrong, but I think straight tip refers to captoe blucher (open lacing) and captoe when used alone typically refers to a captoe balmoral (closed lacing).

maybe straight tip is where there is a just a line/perforation across the toe of the shoe.
and captoe is where there is actual leather capping the end.

I think we need to put together a Venn Diagram because a shoe/boot could theoretically be a straight-tip medallion captoe, any single one of those, or any combination of two.

It could be captoed and medallioned but not straight-tipped.
It could be straight-tipped and captoed but not medallioned.
It could be straight-tipped and medallioned but not captoed.

If I were more ambitious, I would put together the diagram and find examples of each possibility.

Then we can tackle the question as to why Norwegian Split Toes aren't actually split at the toe.
And why v-tips are called that.
