Similar but a significant enough difference.  I actually prefer the Naval boot, and not for its name.

I had not paid attention to the perforation! This makes my decision easier since my JCrew color 8s have perforation. Gotta switch it up...

How different is the grant from barrie in terms of looks? I can't really tell from photos because they look so similar.

The Grant is what I would consider to be half way between the Plaza and the Barrie in terms of formality. I personally prefer the Grant last as I prefer the more formal shape. But I also tend to dress more formally with my Aldens.

Both are magnificent boots and it is hard to go wrong either way.

Leffot does the same thing. Most stuff is offered up on their site (I like their 20% upfront policy as opposed to AOM 100%), but there are certain makeups that go to their regulars - most of whom are heavy hitting clientele. Guys who drop $10K+ a year on shoes and/or go to trunk shows and order, etc. there's nothing wrong with it. Their consistent base should have that access. Not justifying AOM here, just saying it's not abnormal.

Is there an arbitrary line that one must cross in order to be "in the know"? Or should they do what Leffot does and throw up a pic of a Cigar Indy and Ravello Daytripper on instagram and call it a day?

I really have no dog in the fight, I just don't think there is a way of doing this without making some people mad.

When talking to the sales associate today, he simply said I just had to ask and I hadn't done that yet. Little hard to ask when you don't know it exists. Nonetheless, I will still buy from them and now I know.

Yep if you know about it all you had to do was ask. Simple email added to the list. You can request specific makeups though and be directly added to the list for those.

I won't try to include all of the many post on this subject today.  I think it was best said you are not going to please all the people all the time.  I do know there have been many post by mdubs and myself on the topic on how to land rare color/make ups.  It started for me, and I think mdubs by finding every Alden retailer out there.  I emailed or called at least 50 stores.  Told them Im looking for rare color shell...what do you have in my size,  I ask for 2-3 sizes that might fit.  This where thing can get weird,  In several cases I bought rare shell in multiple pairs.  I would check back 1-2 weeks later and do the same routine and voila they found more!  I have no explanation for this...other than they were misplaced in storage.  My relationships started there and have evolved, where I typically cal the Big 4 at least 1 time per month.  I missed out on the 1st run of the Ravello CT boot from DC.  //i had emailed about several time and tried to call too.  I got missed on that one but a big deal, honest mistake.  On the flip side when I say Leffot post the Day Tripper instagram and Cigar Indy.  I knew these were long delayed preorders.  I also suspected that the delay was long enough some people dropped out.  I simply send a an emailed asked and they had space and I'm on it.  My point is sometimes all you have to do is ask

Some of you recently got a chance at a cigar medallion toe boot from DC, and some whiskey or ravello lwb too..  The word on that was posted by me to the this forum.  Alden DC did not expect these items...they just showed up.  The cigar medallion captoes were a non US order that fell through with limited sizes.  But it a sweet make up and the only way to find out was one of us spreading the word.

I agree that lists could be clearer, how to handle, what you want, specific color and style etc.  I will take partial blame for some of the cryptic posts today and will do my best to refrain in the future.  In some cases it feel like you won the lottery and want celebrate.  I do think we need to be somewhat reserved on what we post about this.  The list that went out today made it clear it was 1st come, 1st served and it was an email blast with everyone having a chance.  The time your email was sent determined who got called first.  Likely if were first in line and they called and you did not answer you might lose out when you get through.  I think the runs were around 12 ravello sw, 12 whiskey WT boot, and 4 cigar chukkas.  Thats the total run!

I hope everybody takes what they learned and works on getting on the lists.  Confirm your on the list, then call them and ask whats cooking next spring and fall?

Good Luck

Steve

Which laces do you guys like better?

Saz, I prefer the Brown Waxed laces myself.

Congrats on the purchase! They look great with that denim. I agree with Mike on the dark laces. Gives them a more striking look (and some needed masculinity to the design, in my opinion).

Makes it fun for me. Sorry it doesn't add to your ultimate enjoyment. For me it does.

It was more in reference to the point about it wouldn't be as fun if everyone got what they wanted. I couldn't/cant understand how anyone could say that. I wish I could go back to when it was waaay easier to get what we wanted. No secret lists, no instagram hints, no pre orders which sell out in mins.

IDK its rather frustrating from the outside looking in. As another member mentioned there is little point to people initially posting about this cool make-up but not posting the info to help others initially. Note: This is coming from someone who doesnt care about the shoes offered today and from someone who instantly rushed to SF to inform follow members that Leffot had their initial restock of Daytrippers years ago and also when LS had a handful of Ravello shortwings made up for the Styleforum 10 year anniversary.

Sorry if I came off as rude or anything, I've just noticed a bit shift in the way things are going wrt Alden in recent years and I'm not a fan of it. (but I also understand there is noting I can do about it as it all really comes doen to supply and demand.

Damn.  These are insane.  I hope someone runs these again!  Thanks for the pics!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the laces. Looks like I'll probably be switching them around based upon my outfit.

@bobbo316 - yes, these are from J. Crew. If these were snuff suede they'd be a 10 in my book. Still, the brass eyelets, neo-cork sole, TB last and footbalance heel make these a solid 9.314 for me.

Very nice boots sir.
I like the darker laces. The contrast is more interesting to me.

The ravello is so good lately. Your shoes look awesome.

Wow, those Brixtons are sick. They would make a mighty fine winter boot. All eyelets and antique edge are sweet details.

+1, I agree completely. Those would be great if they were ever made again.

I was fortunate to get one of the 12 Ravello SW bluchers, Hampton last.  FWIW, I have an extensive purchasing history, and frequently stay in touch w/ retailers.

9.314 haha... Whats your metric look like? :teach:

For you Marlow shortwing blucher (RL/ C&J) fans out there, do you take the same size for both the Marlow and Barie and size up half from the Marlow to the Hampton?

For instance is

8.5D Marlow = 8.5 Barie

and

8.5D Marlow = 9D Hampton

So Saz these are TB actually and not Barrie?, interesting, I like the flat waxed laces.
