The Dalton shell boot is nice, but it has an awkward looking design for a wingtip boot.  Are shell Daltons really selling for more than $700 retail??  Seems like it's too much.

AE-Walnut shell Dalton versus Alden-Ravello LWB...  not sure why the Dalton looks like the the wing and perforations have been cut too small.  It's a good boot but looks awkward.  For $415, I guess it's a good deal.  You just need to decide for yourself whether or not you like its look.  I got mine (first quality; I have a similar connection) for $400 with shoe trees, argyle socks, BNIB, and with shipping included.  When my ravello wingtip boots arrive this fall I doubt I will reach for these AE boots much at all.

It does look awkward!!! Thanks for helping me make up my mind

I think you have to decide what you truly like and go for it provided the price is okay for you.  I personally would rather $750 on a shell boot that I know I will love rather than a a great deal that has some issues.  Great deals lead to a closet full of shoes and boots that you will eventually purge.

Good luck my friend!

I also have found it a hard boot to get a good fit on. Just my two cents, but the side of them just bothered me. Fortunately, the walnut shells are unlined and have the stitching.

I recommend the JGilbert Color 8 version which is made on the Plaza Last.

Thanks for the advice!!

I think I'm going with the navy blue Greenwich boot on leffot and winn perry boot, I'm on a bit of a spree, but I'm selling all my trickers to help make up the difference smile.gif I used to love the 4497 last but now it feels like a space boot

I can get a new pair of burgundy cordovan dalton boots from AE for $415

Or the win perry vegano calf skin boots from alden

Opinions on either one?

As others have said, the AE Dalton design looks off to me. Alden knows how to make a WT boot.

I would suggest holding on to a few of the trickers, just in case it's a passing phase (I had one!). trickers are incredibly well made, and finished better than alden calf (e.g. no messy welts, and seamless joining of the leather piece on the welt, etc). But I agree - the 'country' lasts are even rounder than alden's.

Does anybody in the community know of a 990 or Dover Unlined Shell with just regular non-flex soles? The Flex is too soft for me, I need something I can walk a few miles in. Probably a specialty makeup.. Hoping some retailer does this once in a while.

Chipshot, my friend. The stock 990 is on the Double Leather sole. No store is coming to me at this moment, but I am sure it can also be purchased on the Plantation Crepe Sole or the Commando.

In addition, I don't know that Alden would make an unlined PTB/dover with a double leather sole.  The double leather sole is very stiff and heavy.  It would likely put too much stress on an unlined shoe... lightweight slipper-like shoe with a heavy-weight sole doesn't make much sense.  If this isn't what you were intending to suggest, then pardon my mistake.  (BTW, I could be totally wrong about this)

Good luck!

Sorry guys.. I misspoke .. I meant an Unlined PTB Shell with a regular single leather sole. Not a Flex fan...

Have you tried Alden DC? I know they carry an unlined Dover but have no recollection of which sole it is on.

It's on single waterlock. And it's very comfortable.

The variation in color on those is incredible.....they almost look like a combination of #8 and black in that second picture.
