1) 1st question, I've found LWBs offered in a 'mix' of grain & smooth leather. Does this particular combination have a particular designation? (To make it easier to search for?) I'd love to pick up a pair with a Dainite sole (I'm also considering a brown calf LWB with a commando sole as an alternative).

Something like this minus the kilt!

2) I've heard varying opinions about the wearability of shell in rain (with most saying they avoid it), any rule of thumb re the topic?

anyone see alden madison post on IG of the green suede boot? is that an entirely new model? i don't recall a boot on the van last...

Hmm...I'll go out on a limb and predict a slow seller with that one (the CXL version looks pretty good though). Overall, the IG photos for Madison are great.

Similar boot I like is offered on sale from Alfred Sargent at about $150 less than a similar Alden boot...Any help to quality of Alfred Sargent compared to Alden? I have several Alden's just do not know much about AS

Haha. Green suede with a crepe sole for $550 might be a hard sell...

I'm no help on a name for the combination of smooth and grain leather, but it is a look that I enjoy. I really like those Alfred Srgents as well (without the kilt would be ideal though).

Personally, I would rather where my shell in the rain than my calf. The water marks seem to dry up and clear away much more quickly than on calf. I think the resiliency and durability of shell is a major part of its appeal.

I don't know where you are geographically or what type of winters you will likely encounter, but if you are somewhere that you are going to see any significant snow and/or ice, I think the commando sole is much better than the Dainite sole. I know some folks love the Dainite but I have just never found it to be a very stable or grippy sole.

If I were looking for a "dressy" Alden boot for the winter it would probably be the shell color #8 wingtip boot with black as a second choice.

These beauties came today in the post!

Can this scuff be brushed out, and what would be the best way to do so?

Denver, well really Colorado in general, just doesn't appreciate this level of footwear. I probably own more than the rest of the state combined.

Thanks for the responses. Didn't go to the J. Gilbert store but did visit Lawrence Covell in the Cherry Creek area.

The store had 8 stock models in standard sizes and widths. All CXL or suede (barrie lasted PTB and dovers, leydon-lasted chukkas, indy boot and a shortwing). Tried on a few pairs but my foot isn't made for the Leydon Last without going wide and they only stocked D widths.

Very nice family owned store and I interacted with a helpful salesman named Rick who's been with the store for 20+ years. He said that they recently started stocking Aldens with plans to expand their selection.

Yup. That can certainly be brushed out. Wipe it with a damp, barely wet cloth then brush with a horsehair brush. It should all but disappear.

+1. shell cordovan can take WAY more than that and still come out like new.

Any one have this tobacco chamois captoe boot on commando from shoemart? I was thinking it would make a good inclement weather beater boot. Thoughts?

Is anyone on the list for the J. Gilbert #8 plaza straight tip boot? Is there a confirmed order yet for this fall?
^ I had same thought but it wasn't stocked in my size. Going with Winn Perry's crepe soled plain toe boot.

Oooooooooh... is this new?  I am starting to have a thing for the tassel moc.  For the first time I wore my color 8 tassels with a suit last night for a meeting.  Initially wasn't really sure how I felt about it, but ended up really liking it.   What's next, cigar, snuff suede, black shell, decisions???

Looking great MrDV!!

I think I am, but I checked with Yenni not that long ago and nothing is confirmed for shell boots.
