http://leffot.com/shop/index.php/shoes/alden/89920-saddle-shoe.html

"At the height of their popularity during the fifties and sixties Saddle Shoes were a staple of preppy Ivy Leaguers’. The preppy doctrine Take Ivy includes an Ivy Wardrobe Directory, which lists the following shoes."

If you look into the book "Take Ivy", you will see what they meant by the statement.

Although I think the LHS, the beefroll penny loafer, and the tan buck with red brick sole accomplish the same task of being preppy.

When I was in High School, the preppy kids all wore the tan buck with red brick sole.

I am having a hard time remembering the brand, but they were huge. (Edit: Bass)

Preppy is subjective. The least preppy guy here is the preppiest person at their office.
For me,
#8 lhs.

^^^ I wore LLBean's saddle bucks (snuff suede with brownish/reddish leather saddle). They were my absolute favorite shoes growing up! I've looked for years but LLBean discontinued them.

In the 50's and early 60"s the popular saddles were the white with black saddle, also worn by cheerleaders when I was in High School.

These are similar but have sturdy rubber commando soles which are more "al dente". (No offense meant.)

Yes, but you may be happier with a commando sole, due to traction issues.

So I sent an email to Leather Soul:

 Tristen,

Thank you for the email. The sole is Alden's Commando sole which is basically a rubber lug sole stitched and glued on to a leather sole. If you have any other questions please let us know.

That's interesting, I thought.  So the sole itself is Alden's.  I called Alden Shop of San Francisco and asked if they had a Commando sole option for the 405s.  He said "We don't make anything like that."  I asked him what he'd recommend, and he said "I don't know what to tell you, we don't make anything like that."  Which was odd because this is on their website:

http://www.aldenshop.com/Store/DrawProducts.aspx?CategoryID=146&ParentID=4&PageID=&Action=

So I guess I'm confused, if the boot is Alden and the sole is Alden, why can't I get them from any old Alden shop?  Why do I have to go through a Hawaii company that's always sold out?

Specific retailers have specific makeups. Not all Aldens are available anywhere. Only stock models that you find on Aldens site (if that's what you want to call it).

If you are going to go the leather soul route, then yea. If you wind up needing a different size and they don't have it in stock from that run you will need to wait till the next run to have them replaced. And you'd be luck to have that happen within a year or so.

Still working the MAC break-in method. Oh so ready to take these new Alden DC Ravello beauts outside. Its amazing how different they appear according to the light they are or are not in when looking at them.

The Indy 404 (Kudu on lug sole) is not impossible to get.

You should be able to get that as a stock item at any of the Alden stores.

You asked for a 403 on commando, and they don't.

I know Epaulet has the 404 in a few sizes:

They also have a few sizes of the innsbrook that are scoming in without an owner. I would contact them:

I have a feeling you will be pleased with how this batch turned out. I couldn't be happier with my pair. Great shoes and great service from Kathy and the folks at Alden DC.

So Alden Madison just posted some new grain leather samples on IG.

I really wish there was grain shell available...

That is my grail as of now.
