Heads up:  If you are applying VSC to 17 pairs of shoes over an hour-long session, be sure you are in a well ventilated room/area.  I'm still light-headed from my session this afternoon (it's been four hours).

:(

Left is first pair. Right is second pair. Right pair has a lot less volume. I'm in a profession where we're trained to detect even half millimeter differences, so to me this looks crazy off. I thought it was just me, so I did a blind test and waited to see if my girlfriend would comment first, and sure enough she did. She asked me if I got a new pair of shoes. I told her it was an exchange pair and she was shocked by how "off" the second pairs look. This is coming from someone who can't tell my captoes apart from my wingtips, so I know it's not just me. She and I both like the aesthetics of the first pair better, but I actually prefer the fit of the second pair (I have flat feet).

I would keep the 2nd pair just for the better fit, but if you look at the pic above of the left and right sides of the 2nd pair, you can see that the right side is affected moreso than the left and the heel heights of both sides are still about half centimeter shorter.

I guess I'm keeping the first pair and sending the second pair back. And I guess this is why you guys have been saying that even shoes that are the same size, and on the same last can fit a little differently.

Unbelievable ... it's as if they were built on different lasts.

T.I.A. - This Is Alden

Alden is capable of producing great shoes. But they commonly make shoes with imperfections and sometimes attempt to pass them off as first quality. Let's stop with the feigned outrage or genuine surprise when it happens, however unfortunate.

first shoe i inspected looked totally fine to me. minor creasing, some wierd but minor discolorations, some fraying on the welt... all totally fine for me and especially fine for a seconds purchase.

but the left shoe both breaks my heart and pisses me off that some TSM employee had the gall to add in the "you may not crease these in order to return them!" inspection card.

Follow up:

I shipped these back to TSM with a comment expressing some frustrations at my shoes being third or fourth quality instead of seconds.

I received a call today from someone at TSM apologizing for these shoes leaving the warehouse and a promise to reimburse me for both delivery and return shipping.

Gentlemen, thank you very much. They do have a rather mature Ravello color, but they have a number of scuffs and scratches that will require a little love to adjudicate. But I think with enough buffing and using the deer bone, I can get them looking great after a few sessions. :-)

Figured that I would take them for a quick spin today. Sorry, Saz, I think I will take these guys around the blocks a few more times.

PSA: Finally found some flat waxed laces that are cheap and good quality, and slightly more on the rugged side (they are a touch wider than the Alden laces):
