I know lighting plays a big part in pics posted here, but the quality of the shell of those #4 boots of @thebeebs and also some other older shell posted here looks far superior to shell of new shoes today. Older shell looks like glass where all the shell I own (within the past 2 years or so) and pics I see here is quite grainy and bumpy. I get the feeling that due to demand they are using shells that they normally would not have not that far in the past..

...Or the older shell has been brushed enough times to look smoother.

I know a pair I had that I brushed much more than others got that appearance.

I guess it's possible. I got some bumpy ass shell that looks like sandpaper would be required to knock it down. And on the other hand, the cap on my 4060s looks like glass.

I think you would almost have to agree that they are using shell nowadays that they might have rejected in times past...

There are flaws in the shell, I wont deny. There are also inconsistencies in the acrylic finish they apply, which gets smoothed out over time.

That is true, too. I did not factor that in.

SF Dovers are build on the flex-welt right?

Can somebody speak on the flex welt? I heard it's a more comfortable welt due to its elasticity?

Here a couple of toes from my shoes that I have handy:

Shell Indy. Mid last year.

Leffot Tanker. Mid-Late last year

4060 Late '12-Early '13

Not the best pic of the 4060 cap, but you can at least tell they are flat.

Has it been verified that the finish Alden uses is acrylic? I keep hearing it repeated but am not sure where it's coming from.

@Jezec ^^^ true, but double leather or double water loc absorbs more of the impact when walking on hard surfaces. I prefer the double leather soles for that reason. My knees (multiple surgeries) need that support.
