Leydon Last sizing/fit question for purchase of Snuff Suede Flex-Welt Chukkas - I live in LA so stopped by Unionmade to try on the 8.5D and 9D (I am a 9D Brannock).
The 8.5D seemed to fit very well upon first wear but after walking around the store and wearing for more than 5 minutes, noticed pressure/rubbing against the inside of my feet, right above the ball sort of near the instep (hopefully that description is clear...). The shoe otherwise fits great in the toebox/heel etc.
When I asked about this pressure/slight discomfort, the woman at Unionmade noted that over time this should break in with both wear and also if I use shoe trees (?).
Question - has anyone experienced a break-in period for these shoes as mentinoed by the woman at Unionmade? Or is that not really the case, and should I look to get the shoe in size 8.5E?
I just recently made my first Leydon purchase for the same exact shoes. I've only worn them out a handful of times so far, but they feel like they broke in a little bit and are now insanely comfortable. Most of my Aldens have broken in a little bit at the ball of my foot where the shoe flexes the most. My Barrie last boots were probably the tightest I had in that area, and stretched to fit perfectly. Of course those are of different construction since they are lined. I did experience a little pressure where you described on my Leydon lasted chukkas, but I did NOT experience anything that I would really consider rubbing. One thing that seemed to help me stretch my Barrie boots aside from wear, was to rotate one of my Woodlore boot trees while breaking it in. They don't support the width of shoes very well, but curve up on the top of the tree. I think the boot tree better supports the vamp and tongue area and helps to stretch it more than a regular shoe tree would.
I was absolutely right to go to the E width for the Leydon. Everywhere I've read has said that this last runs a bit narrow and I find this to be absolutely true.
For reference, this is what I am in the following lasts. I usually need a little wider toe box. In the most general terms I consider myself a size 9.
Barrie (boot) 8.5D
Trubalance (boot) 8.5D
PS - I'm amazed at the versatility of the snuff suede color and the style of the shoe itself. I can see why they are so popular.
