I believe its called "pinking" but am not certain about that. Wasn't aware that you are able to order them with special requests. Also, I can't speak from personal experience, but yesterday there was some discussion of how the hampton [last] looses its sleekness in wide widths. Don't know if that is a deal breaker for you.

Thank you for your response. I'm not sure about Alden, but I know AE allows you to make many changes to the standard designs on custom orders. I would imagine alden does the same. I'll find out Saturday when I go for a fitting.

tassels are classy which were invented by alden in 1947

No objection - I too find tassels classy. I have color 8 tassels with antique edging (BNelson).

However, the gent suggested he had a hard time finding slip-ons that fit, save for Grant lasted models. That fact, combined with various persons' struggles with the aberdeen, was the rationale behind my advice suggesting he retain both Grant lasted models, neither of which were tassels. Personally, if I were him, I would get a black shell tassel over the split-toe in question, but that wasn't the issue.

As for the "dressy" factor, I maintain the split-toe slip-on versus the tassels slip-on is mostly a toss-up, with a slight edge to the tassel. Having said that, the gent could wear either shoe with essentially any style of outfit save for a suit. I would wear neither with a suit. Indeed, I would not wear any slip-on with a suit. That, for me, is non-negotiable. Others see it differently. That is okay with me.

Hello Forum,
New here and have a question for you. I'm getting ready to buy a pair of Alden cordovan perforated cap toe bal. I've noticed that. The tongues on the ones I see for sale have a tongue with the top serrated. I'm not a fan of that and want to make sure the ones I order won't have that. Is there a name for that detail?
I'm having them made special since I have very wide feet and no one stocks them normally (that I've found) so I'm hoping having plain topped tongues can be done without much trouble.

Alden sells a brown paste wax, but no need to apply paste wax for a while (unless the shoes were purchased used and need some TLC)

alden tan for whiskey
brown for cigar
why would you apply wax- check the mac method

I fully subscribe to the mac method but find that an initial wax is all that I need. The factory's wax is sticky and doesn't do a great job (IMO).

What can you do about closed speed hooks? I got a pair of Indys and they had one speed hook that was really closed, so I returned them. My replacement pair had two speedhooks that were bent down / closed -.-

C-ring pliers. Wear your boots into a hardware store and "borrow" a pair off of the shelf. They are built for spreading c-rings and are essentially backwards working needle-nose pliers. They start out closed, and when you squeeze the handle they spread outward.
