Was hoping for a recommendation on shoe trees. I picked up a pair of the J Crew boots at 30% off and tried putting in a new pair of foot fitter shoe trees (http://www.footfitter.com/p/102-034/woodlore-ultra-cedar-shoe-tree.html) that I use for other Barrie lasted Aldens and they don't fit in the boots. The toe of the tree seems to be too wide. Has anyone else experienced this? Any recommendation on a different brand to use on this boot?

I have the J.Crew #8 PCT boots and I use the Woodlore Epic (double shaft) shoe trees, which fit my boots perfectly. On some of my shoes/boots, the Epics are a bit too wide and in those cases, I use the AE solid trees (or JABs). I don't have any experience with the Woodlore Ultras although I've heard others say they are good trees.

Unless my footwear has lasted trees, for my shoes (and boots) I use cedar trees from Alden/BB - which are split-toe - size Large, or AE/JAB - which are full-toe - size Medium.

The Alden and BB trees are essentially the same. The AE/JAB trees are literally the same.

Is it always a burdensome task to find shell wingtip boots that ARENT the #8 with dark leather soles?

For the most part, yes. And even yes sometimes when you are looking for a color 8 boot with dark edging. But don't be discouraged, some on this thread (perhaps many) would maintain that color 8 boots with dark edging - wingtip or otherwise - are the best. :D

To maintain its versatility, I absolutely prefer the dark edging for color 8, but that's just me. Initially I thought the antique edging on the color 8 Brixton (Epaulet) didn't make much sense, but then after seeing pics in the wild I can see why many like them. I still prefer the dark edge with color 8 wt boot.

By definition it's burdensome to find rare shell boots in cordovan, wingtip or not. You have to either get in a retailer's preorder/reserce list or follow this thread and store websites closely.
