From what I've been told, Alden is not going to be using #4 anymore.

Strategy is watch ebay and the market place here and be prepared for a bidding war that will end above retail.

Oh. I see. When was the last time they were offered? That's wild.

What you are looking for is almost the rarest model among rare models. Literally every member of this thread who doesn't own a pair would likely be in on it. You put me, ryden, tifosi, bk, and others in a bidding war and the price would go north with the quickness.

Man that's wild. And so is it simply a case of Alden getting the right color of leather and deciding to produce these? How does this work economically?

Generally speaking lighter shell requires a more perfect hide as blemishes become more visible. However (pure conjecture) I believe there is marketing element to it as well. Most exotics are sold months in advance by most retailers. You need to be proactive most of us have a detailed email address book and contact retailers frequently. Build contacts and relationships with vendors and hope you are in the right place at the right time. I obtained both of my rare shells right of the gate with a week of one another, pure luck.

IMO, There are a few things at work in acquiring rare make-ups and exotic colors:

1. Luck
2. An established relationship with certain retailers.
3. Willingness to pull the trigger immediately if the opportunity presents itself.

Plenty of guys have stories of missed opportunities due to a lack of no.3.

Sure, makes sense. Thanks for the info. Is there a list of retailers or do these slowly get built over time? What's considered a rare shell? #4? #2? I assume #8 is pretty standard.

Have a good weekend!

Recently fall in love with Tassel loafers and am looking for a pair. Good looking shoes!

This balmore make me jealous! And it's now on my list...I suppose the balmore is more readily available just like the 990 and 975?

I believe in 2012 #4 boots were sold by TSM.

#2 most recently by a retailer that has been disclosed in a previous post. No idea how or where the shell was found for that it really came out of no where. #2 is pretty much the honus wagner t-206 of shoes. You can nearly count the guys that own a pair on your fingers.

#4 ct boots were only offered once about 2 years ago. They only made a few pairs, 10-15? Could be less than that.
It is not likely to be offered again.

I would bid if I saw my size come up again. It would get ugly.

1. Luck is HUGE. #1 factor in my experience.
2. Yes
3. If you're not ready to "pay first ask questions later" you're playing the wrong game.
