Should I suck it up and just apply Defender and wear them out when it is raining? I have some great shell boots and shoes but it seems I rarely wear them with the amount of rain (and previous to that, snow) that we have been getting where I live.

I wear several Alden (and non-Alden) shell shoes in the rain all the time with no ill effects.  Perhaps, I am old school or conservative or whatever, but I don't put Defender on my shoes. I never really thought Defender was necessary since shell cordovan is so water resistant/ non porous. I just wipe off wet shell shoes after they have become wet, and set them down on the sides to dry.

Isn't part of the point of shell boots that they are wonderful in inclement weather?

I am genuinely curious to hear whether others avoid rain for the shell. I recognize some are probably afraid to soak $700+ shoes they otherwise baby.

I wore cordovan throughout most of the Toronto winter. Commando sole was a must though!

I don't mind wearing shell in rain, and cleaning up is not hard IME. But don't like leather soles in rain. Also more caution when salty slush is on the ground.

Late Easter chocolate. And no comments from the brass hating crew. j/k...still trying to decide myself on this one. Oddly enough, one sole is tanned two or three shades darker than the other.

I don't wear mine in torrential rains, but I will in a light to medium rain.  I prefer commando soles when it's wet for obvious reasons.

All my shells get water spots and some get welts.  They always go away with a little time and brushing, so I never worry too much.  I do try to take care of my shoes as best as possible, but I recognize that they're meant to be worn.  Besides, how would a shoe ever get a good patina without exposing them to all kinds of conditions.  It took me a while to come around, but I admire a pair of well-worn and cared for shoes with all the scuffs, bumps, fading, and spots.

Those look pretty nice, I like how the stitching contrasts.

I've become less and less worried about rain and cordovan. Some pairs I reach specifically for in the rain (black and color 8 PTBs, color 8 wingtip boots, black and color 8 tankers, cigar captoe boots and cigar chukkas). I won't wear whiskey PTBs in the rain, though. I don't plan on wearing my cigar balmoral captoes in the rain too much.

I wear alpine grain in the rain.
It didn't rain today. I wear these more than most, they cheat the rotation.

This is my first post on SF so I figure I'll share some camera phone pics of my first pair of Alden's #8 LWB 8D with the antique edging.  Sorry the picture quality is not great, and they are do for a good shine as I have only wore them a couple of times (still breaking them in). I picked them up online from The Bureau at Belfast - Merchants & Missionaries. http://www.thebureaubelfast.com/shop/brand/58/alden/  for approximately $850 after shipping and currency conversion ( I know it's a little pricey but I really wanted the antique edge trim from Alden. There are still a couple of sizes left too! I'm already shopping for my 2nd pair of Aldens, I'm hooked!! Looking at #8 or cigar cap toe boots, jumpers, or tankers (if I'm lucky enough!). [spoiler/]

Very nice. Didn't realize there were so many variations on the antique edge/color 8 combo, but this is my new favorite.

I like the contrast. They look good. Can you share a photo of the mismatched soles?
