Looking for Alden sizing advice. Nearly all of my shoes are of the Allen Edmonds variety; although I do have a pair of Alden Indy 404's in Kudu - love that boot!

The 404's are a tad loose overall in 10E (but not inappropriately so for such a heavy duty boot) so I thought I would check in here first before breaking out my credit card. In AE I'm anywhere from a 10E to 10EEE depending on last and whether it's calf or cordovan. I have Park Avenues in both 10EE and most recently 10EEE; the latter being most comfortable. That said whether we're discussing a loafer, boot, or balmoral shoe, my shoe size is a consistent 10 in AE with only the width being in question. I'm looking to change things up and perhaps find some more comfortable lasts and broader shoe designs.

I guess I'm most curious about sizing LWB in Barrie (975), balmoral wingtip in Tremont (974), and Straight Tip blucher in Aberdeen (2160). Is 10E the way to go regardless of last?

Any thoughts on the merits of the Alden 974 versus the AE Cambridge?

I only had a couple of nice shoes when I pre-ordered these from leffot. It was like the movie "the notebook" but with saddles.

AWESOME

Those were navy wool trousers. I have worn them with dark denim as well, they look as good as any PTB like shoe with dark denim. That said I wear them with chinos and trousers more.

Buddy, welcome. The Barrie is a fuller last (close to the TruBalance - which your Indy is on) and most size down in either length or width. The Tremont is on the fuller side and some size down or stay true to size (tts). I personally stuck tts on my 974 and Whiskey WT. The Aberdeen is Alden's narrowest last and most go tts on it.

I have owned a Cambridge in both Black and Burgundy and sold my Burgundy for the 974 and need to sell my Black, because I just got the Alden for Brooks Brothers Wingtip (similar to plaza last, typically a tts shoe). The 974 is not quite as sleek as the Cambridge, but it has a nicer feel to it and I love Alden's shell treatment. I can post pics of the 974 and Cambridge soon.

Here is the generic sizing chart. Remember that people's feet fill shoes differently and this isn't gospel.

Congrats! I was on that list too! :-) The Ravello LHS is one of Alden's finest and well worth waiting for.

^^ If I could score a pair of those..they would be my go to shoe for spring/summer. I'd probably wear them everyday.

How often do new boots come out? I've been watching for a few weeks now, and everything looks the same day after day. I realize a few weeks is nothing, but I still thought I'd ask how often new styles hit the market -- whether it's once a month, once a quarter or whenever Alden feels like it.

I'm asking because I'm fairly settled on the boot I want. I'm hoping for a cap toe boot, in cordovan #8, with eyelets exclusively (no speed hooks) and a commando soul. So far I haven't been able to find all four in a boot for sale online (though I've found more than a few on display on your feet on this board). The closest thing I have found is this number on The Shoe Mart:

http://www.theshoemart.com/alden-mens-cap-toe-boot-shell-cordovan-black-shell/pvc-ald-mxsdsy-4065_ald_m_cap_toe_boot_shell_cordovan.html

Can that be outfitted with a commando sole after I wear through the first one? That seems like a decent compromise.

If so

(and last question I swear)

The boot I linked to is made on the Grant last. I only own one other set of Adlens, a pair of longwing bluchers built on the Barrie last, size 10. I'd love to stick with the Barrie because I know it, but since my other requirements are fairly rigid, I thought maybe I should branch out.

OK. Sorry for so many questions at once, but I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

Sir, it's really up to retailers to come out with designs.

The standard boot Color 8 Cap Toe Boot is the 4060, which is Color 8 on the Grant last, all eyelets, with a double leather sole. Alden DC does the 4060HC, which is Color 8 on the Grant last, eyelets and hooks (the H) and a commando sole the C). Yenni (JGilbert) does their own variant in Color 8 on the Plaza last with eyelets and hooks and the Commando sole. I personally own the DC 4060HC. Alden San Fran does the 4070H, which is Color 8 on the Barrie last with hooks and double leather sole. I have not seen a 4060C variant personally and there may be others, but those are the ones that I found doing research prior to buying the 4060HC.

I don't think Alden has had any new models since 1884... LOL.

Seriously, they are few and far between. I am a fan of the standard 4060 (1)because I own it and (2)because it is a great looking boot. I think the double leather looks great on it. I have no want or need for a commando on that boot. The Grant is a bit sleeker than the Barrie and the flat welt and the double leather really compliment it. If you really want a commando I would suggest buying the 4060 from TSM and just having it resoled with a commando when the time comes. Note that you will not be able to have it resoled with a commando by Alden, but someone like B.Nelson can do it without a problem.

With that said, I wear my boots like boots regardless of the sole. I am somewhat in the minority here. I was just out in the rain in my 4060s last night. I wear them in the snow too!

Good luck with your decision. Most people go TTS on the Grant so if you went 1/2 down on the Barrie to 10, then I'd go 10.5 on the Grant.

OK So if I want the eyelets to the top, I have to go with the 4060. Hopefully I can have commando soles put on in a few years, sooner if I drag my feet on my sportster.

If that's the case I just need to know how to translate a 10 Barrie, to a X Grant.  The 10 Barrie is roomy, but fits to me.  By roomy that means I slide around a touch in dress socks, and it's a perfect fit with a little thicker sock.  I've looked at that chart, and it seems...... I don't know if I had to guess I think I could be a 10 or a 10.5 in the Grant
