Maiden voyage today for the 2210.

Beautiful kicks!  My next pair for sure

I was thinking the same.

My friend, welcome!  I think you will find the 975 a great place to start.  The MacNeil was extremely disappointing for me years ago; I couldn't find a comfortable size.

BTW, what is your barrie size? :paranoia:

No idea I'm afraid. Never been sized for Alden. The 975 looks promising. Though I wonder what more versatile, the no 8 cordovan or the regular dark brown. I would wear with chinos and denim exclusively.

I think I'll stick with my same size.... at least that's a good starting point. If I feel that it's too tight, I'll go up an E size.

Thanks

Thanks all. Closed heel or 360? Methinks 360 flat welt...

I hate to complicate this for you even more, but I've had mixed results.  I have barrie lasted LWBs in both calf and shell.  The calf models do fit a smidge bigger/looser than the shell.  When I sized myself for the LHS, I tried on a calf pair in store and they fit perfectly in my barrie size.  I ordered the 986 and they are definitely a smidge looser than the calf (some heel slip).  I suppose I could have gone with a width smaller, but I stuck a tongue pad in them and they felt nice so I kept them.  I didn't want to deal with experimenting with size via shipping.

Good luck!

Decisions, decisions! I thought I was gonna get easy answers but I guess my question is a bit misleading since everyone's foot shape/size is different. So things are not going to fit me as it would anyone else. I think I'm gonna stick with my size, which is a good starting point.

Peace my friend!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

That's a flat 360 welt. If the welt was 270 (also called "closed heel"), you would not be able to see stitching at the heel, like this:

ETA: I revisited this thread just to see if anything had changed - nothing has. I remember being caught up in the magical whirlwind of everything Alden = amazing. This thread is a good source of deals / makeup announcements and pictures. However, nobody seems to want to discuss any other aspects of the brand. Pages will go by with nothing but requotes of the same two pictures over and over again. Anyway, I will leave the thread be - carry on.

Having thought about this sequence of events for probably longer than I should have, I’d like to make what I think are a few salient points, trying not to veer too much into TL;DR territory.

(1) Threads like this are both exchanges of information and communities.  Both exchanges of information and communities can develop pathologies.  For example, with respect to the former, the same information can be “exchanged” over and over again; and with respect to the latter, groupthink can develop over time.

(2) You've come into this thread and tried to blast through these pathologies.  While you've made good points about how stale the exchanges of information have become and how much groupthink there is, you've also come across as something of a dick, and a significant portion of the community is understandably going to react to that.

(3) I’m all in favor of shit-stirrers and contrarians, and I think there’s definitely a place for them in a thread like this.  However, I don’t care for dicks, and I think there are ways to stir shit and be contrary without being a dick. I hope you come back to the thread, but if you do I hope you’ll be a little less dick-ish when you post.

(4) Finally, companies like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s spend literally billions of dollars getting people to form emotional attachments to their products, and they’re really, really good at it.  If you think you’re somehow immune to this, then you’re not as smart as I think you are.

Just received the email too and was about to post!

My first pair of Alden's were from their Calgary store. Very nice and accommodating salesmen. They worked with me for a while until we got the right size and width. Ultimately we found the right size but they didnt have color in stock so they called up the Alden factory and had it shipped to my home address. Great service.
