I have my eye on an upper available in both crepe and double waterlock sole. Which would be a better choice for relatively constant wear as a casual shoe, in a possibly damp wet springtime? I'm concerned with longevity more than aesthetics, but I'm curious what everyone's experience is with these two types.

Also, if I do wish to resolve them, I would go through Alden, can they put a different sole on a shoe than the original, or would I have to go through a third party?

Thanks for any input. I have searched this thread already and read about each sole individually, but not a direct comparison. Seems a fitting question as spring (slowly) approaches.

Alden will recraft with only the original sole type from what I understand. B Nelson here in NYC,however, is a great alternative with a much faster turnaround.

As for the first part of your question, I am looking to pick up a pair in crepe but they're definitely less popular here with the SF crowd. I do have and love the double waterlock sole but crepe has to more comfortable for longer days on your feet.

Thanks Beebs. I agree. If I had to make a boot, it would pretty much have these exact specs.

I bought my first Alden shoes in January, a pair of #8 Chukkas. Love them! Then, ten days ago, I read this:

Alden SF just got a small shipment of Ravello chukkas in. Someone please buy the 8D so I don't.

So now I also own a pair of Ravello Chukkas. Thanks for the heads up, n-domino!

I have a feeling I know where this is headed... Good to know I'm not alone in my addiction. ;-)

After having seen this beautiful photo, the Ravello NST boot (Plaza last) is now first on my wishlist:

I might have to settle for a #8 NST boot, though, who knows when a Ravello NST boot will be available again... I guess I could live with a Ravello Indy boot too.

OK, time to go drooling over some more pictures in this thread.

Just want to say thanks to everybody for sharing all the information you do, for a newcomer like me it's invaluable.

You're a smart man Tommy.  Your written English is better than many here, and you have picked up on the finer intricacies of this thread...  (a) pay close attention to PSA'a, and (b) whatever MrDV has is probably worth targeting...  he has impeccable taste!

These are stunning. So not Alden looking, which is refreshing in a way.

Good stuff. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

I'd love a pair of those

My first foray into Alden shell will probably be these in Color 8. Shame I got into Alden cordovan so late, as I really like ravello and whiskey. I never really liked cordovan till polishing x pairs of calf got tiresome.

I knew coming back to this thread would be bad for me...think I'm going to HAVE to get some of the suede Indy's from Need Supply

Got 3 more compliments on these bad boys in church today. By far my favorite Alden thus far.

The website says my size is out. Is it a call only deal?

I couldn't even find them on the website. I did find some tan chukkas on there for $320 but it appears my size is out of stock.

You will be very happy with the color 8 NST... after all, #8 is king!

I agree with Subutai on crepe being more comfortable (and less loved here). I think in the end for me it would come down to exactly what type of shoe or bot it is though - as much as I love the crepe, some shoes, like the PTB, just look better on something like the double waterlock, IMO.
