In my experience, that's very normal with Alden's crepe and lug soles, and I doubt you'll find a better pair if you return them. I'd say only take them back if it affects the way you walk. I have a pair of old Blackbird snuff shortwings on red crepe where the heels are far more curved than what you're showing, and they're just fine to wear.

Unless it's making it uncomfortable to walk in, I wouldn't worry about it. They are rubber heels are going to wear down unevenly to fit your particular step anyway.

Hello everybody!

First post and English isn't my first language so please be gentle...

I bought my first Alden shoes in January, a pair of #8 Chukkas. Love them! Then, ten days ago, I read this:

Alden SF just got a small shipment of Ravello chukkas in. Someone please buy the 8D so I don't.

So now I also own a pair of Ravello Chukkas. Thanks for the heads up, n-domino!

I have a feeling I know where this is headed... Good to know I'm not alone in my addiction. ;-)

After having seen this beautiful photo, the Ravello NST boot (Plaza last) is now first on my wishlist:

I might have to settle for a #8 NST boot, though, who knows when a Ravello NST boot will be available again... I guess I could live with a Ravello Indy boot too.

OK, time to go drooling over some more pictures in this thread.

Just want to say thanks to everybody for sharing all the information you do, for a newcomer like me it's invaluable.

/Tommy

Great, that's pretty much what I was trying to find out. I've only wore them for about 5 minutes inside the house but I don't think it'll affect the way I walk.

Welcome aboard, Tommy. Congrats on acquiring your chukkas. Ravello is a great color! Good luck with your Alden quest and managing your "addiction".

Welcome to the forum Tommy. Very nice way to start out your eventual Alden addiction. While I doubt we will ever see a ravello NST boot (especially not in that particular shade); if we do I can think of at least 5 members off the top of my head that you will be battling to get them. Myself included because it sounds like we are the same size!! Haha. Welcome!!

The heel on it is not flat but curved side to side as well as front to back. You can see the gap under the edge of the heels in the 1st pic because it's not even touching the ground since the center of the heel hits the ground first. In the 3rd pic I put a ruler flat along one side so you could see the angle of the arc in case it wasn't showing up in the other pics.

your soles are fine. get them on and have fun.

I have PTBs with that lug sole and its the same way. I love them and have no probs; they're my most comfortable Aldens (edit: but I don't have anything on crepe)

Thank you, gentlemen!

Yes, the current ravello shade seems to be darker than it used to. It will be almost two months before I actually have the ravello chukkas in my hands (and on my feet), but the plan is to sort of match them with my favorite bag. The bag isn't shell cordovan, but hopefully they'll look okay together. Here's a bad picture of the bag, taken with my cell phone (it might look a little more red in this picture than it does in real life):

Tifosi, while I'm thankful that n-domino pointed me in the direction of the ravello chukkas, I'm afraid I wasn't able to "help" him by buying the size 8D. I'm a 9D on the Barrie last and 9.5D on the Plaza, so at least we don't have to battle each other!

I have a sole question for you gentlemen.

I have my eye on an upper available in both crepe and double waterlock sole. Which would be a better choice for relatively constant wear as a casual shoe, in a possibly damp wet springtime? I'm concerned with longevity more than aesthetics, but I'm curious what everyone's experience is with these two types.

Also, if I do wish to resolve them, I would go through Alden, can they put a different sole on a shoe than the original, or would I have to go through a third party?

Thanks for any input. I have searched this thread already and read about each sole individually, but not a direct comparison. Seems a fitting question as spring (slowly) approaches.

Leffot #8 Tanker

I've got a few pairs of Alden's and a variety or rarer colours but this is by far my most used pair. That commando sole is a must this winter!
