I'm wondering the same thing myself. I had to re-read the posts above it to see if I missed the retailer. Snuff boot on commando is damn near perfect.

I wear my barrie snuff chukka on crepe year round and it's a great travel shoe. My leydon tan chukka on flexwelt was the go-to travel shoe for several years until I picked up the snuff/crepe version.

I posted these comparison images for reference:

The snuff are a much more substantial shoe with the lining, wider last and crepe sole. The leydon unlined chukka is slipper-like but the barrie/crepe version is more boot-like. There's a place for both.

Yes, sorry, they are the LeatherSoul Plaza Safari.

Patrick_b, gents, is not only a shoe care genius, but also a discerning Alden collector :worship:. I hadn't thought about picking up a chukka on crepe, but if there is a non-formal, non pass-the-grey-poupon kind of shoe, it is a chukka, so the airy feeling of a crepe sole would of course be a neat fit.

I tried to promise myself I'd limit this year's shoe purchases to less than 10. I even tried to make a list so there would be no unplanned purchases. Then I go reading the thread on a random evening and start getting more ideas. Just when you thought you were out...

I love the looks of my snuff Leydon unlined chukka boots but they don't get much wear because I can't get accustomed to the "slipper-like" fit.  I much prefer the sturdier feel of a higher boot.  Not sure if I'll end up keeping them but they're a nice go-to in the summer.

Agreed. The Leydon unlineds seem to be a 1.5 season shoe. I actually like the slipper-like fit, but prefer my dressier Aldens, especially wingtip boots. The Leydon chukkas might get some rotation as a by-the-door shoe for slipping into when you've got sweatpants on and want to grab the newspaper from the driveway or run to the grocery store for a quick stop. Interestingly, random ladies in town consistently comment on how neat looking they are (despite the stains on mine after chaperoning my kid's trip to a sculpture garden).

Most unlined chukk-ers here seem to have gone for the snuff, as I have. Anyone getting good use out of the dark brown suede?

This reminds me to ask if folks are preparing their batting lineups for the spring/summer. I've been on a boot run, but have been thinking about making some acquisiitons for the nicer weather. Right now, the stable includes: cream nubuck lwbs, leffot unlined dovers in king, snuff upl's, snuff chukkas, cigar lhs. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to add an unlined suede dover, king tassels, maybe a cxl chukka, and a tobacco chamois longwing for rainy days. What are you guys planning on rockin' if the snow ever melts?

The only boots/shoes that a stranger has complimented me on (other than a guy at an airport asking me what my Nat CXL Indy's were 'cause he liked them) were the snuff Leydon chukkas.  A fair lady at a Starbucks said "Hey nice shoes" and walked right on by.  I was stoked because I had just bought them the day before.

I'm not sure I know what this "spring" or "summer" is that you speak of. Please elaborate.

Seriously though... once the snow finally melts and I no longer have to worry about salt on the sidewalks and roads, I'll be breaking out the suede to wear more frequently again through the fall. Snuff suede chukkas, longwings, and ranger moccs will get heavy use, as well as a new pair of the choco suede tanker from LS that I have yet to wear out of the house. The other shoe I'll bring back out of the closet for the nice weather is the #8 and Alpine grain saddle shoes. And I'll probably put away the most of the rest of my boots (except the Whiskey Indy boot which I've turned into my beater). My shell LWBs and PTBs, and ranger moccs get worn all year.

thanks for the kind words, if you get a chance to pick up a suede boot i highly recommend it, whatever the color. that safari boot from LS looks fantastic.

i have the brown suede 6-eyelet chukka from j gilbert which sadly give me some heel slip. however, the few times i've worn them, the brown color looks as good as snuff. i've considered the stock brown suede nst on aberdeen.

Size? Color 8 wingtip and Black captoe. Don't part with the cigars unless they're 9D :D

Assuming I already have a wingtip blucher (AF80 or 975), I'd dump the Wingtip boot and choose between the two tankers for the second dumped pair.  I suppose it also depends on what your routine attire looks like and the extent of the rest of your collection of shoes, as well.

I do not own a tanker boot, but I suspect that if I did, I would like to keep both??
