I envision one guy, let's call him Kevin, being at the heart of the issue. Kevin is in charge of all of the small batch Indy orders. Anyway, Kevin has been going through a rough patch, and his attention to detail has been going to the wayside due to some family stuff. He is still a good guy though, so Alden keeps him around.

I will say that there was a string of complaints on this forum regarding defects in multiple sizes for the UnionMade x Stevenson Indy Natural boot. I don't know how many were in that order, but at least six separate people posted pictures and complaints on this thread. The first pair that I got had a big bulge on the side of one of the boots. This was the most common complaint.

The replacement pair that they sent, which the shop supposedly QCed before sending out, had a gap at one of the toe boxes and the leather was slightly asymmetric on the boots. Perhaps I should have returned those too, but as correcting the issue had already taken more than a month and a half from my original order, I compromised my standards, and kept them (thus perpetuating the Alden QC issue vicious cycle).

Oh that Kevin...

I'm an alden noob with only one pair, so I was wondering if Alden's quality is dropping. It seems like the consensus is that Alden is shipping out 2nd quality stuff as firsts.

I received a pair with blotches of edge dressing missing, bent speed hook, and one spot with questionable stitching. I kept them because I didn't want to wait 3 months. It's been 3 months since I have had the shoes, and I haven't worn them yet (especially bad winter weather), so I should have just returned them and waited for the exchange. Regretting it at the moment.

You mentioned a three month wait, are these the Alden x J.Crew shell boots?

This is a bit shady, but why not just buy new boots from J.Crew and swap the old boots with the new ones and return them? They go back to Alden in the end, anyway.

Haha man you're good. Yes they are the Jcrew cordovan captoe boots. I was thinking of calling J.Crew about it, but it looks like the Feb shipment already got shipped, and they are waitlisted until May. The bent speedhook I'm sure I can bend into the right position, the stitching is a little shoddy but I don't think it is that bad, and the edge dressing, I'm sure I can just apply some edge dressing, so no big deal. I know these are never perfect, but three noticeable mistakes on one shoe should warrant second quality IMO.

respectfully, I don't agree with whomever might have said that. I have plenty of pairs, bought all within the last 2+ yrs or so, that should be looked at at first quality.

I feel some people take advantage of that fact that these are handmade for the most part, of raw materials.. things are bound to happen

bent speedhook (assuming its just pressed in on itself), is a five second fix with a butter knife

Color 8 Indy on the Plaza. Sorry, I know a lot of you object to calling it an Indy, but I don't like typing on my iPad that much... :-)

'Twas their second voyage out. First to the office...

I'm not a big fan of the regular Indy, but I'd take a pair of those in a heartbeat.

Has anyone mentioned the Whiskey Shell/Alpine grain saddles on sale at Leffot? Only an 11D, but also only $300.

I can't really say that as I have received nothing but flawless pairs the past year while my first pairs had numerous flaws (that I didn't recognize at the time). Alden is just inconsistent. I would be more wary of " new models" being created by retailers.

Killer boots mdubs. These I really like a lot. How is the fit compared to your other Alden boots, and how did you size them?

In my opinion, handmade doesn't mean poor quality control

I think this thread gets a little overblown sometimes. I find Alden to be very quality. If I didn't I wouldn't continue to give them my hard earned money. Sure mistakes happen and improvements can be made but their brand would not have continued for such an extended time if they truly had poor quality control.

I don't know about other people. I thought I bought Alden for its quality. What I am really buying are their style, last and cordovan. If there are other similar options out there, I would definitely try them
