I may be misunderstanding you, but the commando sole doesn't make the shoe any less "sleek."  The last makes the shoe sleek (or bulky for that matter).  All other things being equal, a LWB on commando is just as sleek as a LWB with a double leather sole.

One might notice the heel of the commando sole if you look closely, but it is pretty subtle IMO.

Good call.  Cullwel & Son is where I picked up my other three pairs of Aldens.    Their Cordovan selection happens to be pretty limited at the moment, and I was looking at a several week wait.   Remembering The Alden Shop from when I lived in the Bay Area, I figured I'd give them a shot.

I think ReppTie is actually right on this. Commando soles are not much higher profile than double leather or Dainite soles, if at all.

However, I would not call any LWBs from Alden sleek.  Words like gunboats, brogues, and bulbous come to mind for me.  Cheers.

By "sleek" I am referring to the entire shoe, which IMO cannot be isolated into its component parts (last vs sole).  I know what you're getting at, but I have a difference of opinion.  The way I see it, shoes on Commando soles are generally too bulky to look proper with a suit.  Can it be worn?  Absolutely.  I just don't think it looks very professional. But reasonable minds can of course disagree...

[response to Smoothie1]

I wasn't claiming that LWBs are sleek.  My point was that commando soles do not really change the degree to which a shoe is considered sleek (or bulky for that matter).

I understand what you're getting at.  While the commandos generally make a shoe more casual, I think they are fairly low profile; enough to wear with a suit in snowy/wintery conditions.  To each his own though...

I am looking at the chukka AoC AF18 -  http://www.alden-of-carmel.com/Shoes-Dark_Burgundy_Shell_Cordovan_Chukka_Boot_80.htm for fall and the never ending winter in Chicago.  Any feedback on comfort.

These are much more attractive than photographs let on.  Just know your size, and know that this style (on the Barrie last or not) runs large.  Good luck.

I realize this; we agree, ReppTiePrepster

I was simply stating that I don't find Alden's LWBs sleek, no matter the sole treatment.

Boot + commando, but ......sleek, IMO

I would wear this with a suit and not think twice.

De-glazed #8 Tanker with one coat of Renovateur and about one minute of brushing. Comparison with a new #8 shoe.

Extremely comfortable.  Commando sole is surprisingly flexible, and great in the Cleveland winter.  One of my favorite Alden's now.

An old Ravello from Alden after restoration. As usual, Alden refinished the uppers with their glazing. Compared with a three year old Ravello.

They look better after the Reno.

As I said yesterday, if you have any Neutral Cordovan polish from Saphir, that will bring the luster back out nicely.

The Reno is doing its job though, I must say.

Wow, those look awesome. They didn't darken them severely which is reassuring that it's okay to let them play with Ravello.

I am going to order the same size as my PTB #8.
