Some observations on Alden shoe colors, after some time as an addict and nephew:

(1) Color 8 is King.  Abundant or not, it's the best color, and it's not even close.
(2) Black shell is underrated.  You will only understand this after wearing it a few times.
(3) No one would ever buy Color 4 if it were readily available.  Its unicorn status is the only reason it's coveted.
(4) Whiskey, though "rare," is the least versatile color, except for Wednesdays of course.
(5) Old cigar is a great color, with olive tones and real depth.  New cigar might as well be relabeled Color 8.
(6) Ravello is solid color, though not as versatile as Cigar.  And if you can't find it, AE brown shell is a fairly close proxy.

1) Agreed 100%
2) Agreed 100%. I'd probably choose black over all of the rare colors (with the possible exception of cigar)
3) Color 4 is indeed overrated. The color looks too inconsistent from shoe to shoe to me. I've seen some cool models (color 4 chukkas, both of MrDV's boots), but the obsession is unwarranted IMO
4) Agreed 100%
5) I dunno, I have a lot of shades of cigar and like em all.
6) Generally true. Ravello can be a bit too "red" sometimes to be versatile. That said I'd like to see more ravello available.

I would add a few more

1) Sometimes basic is better. Not every shoe needs an antique sole, brass eyelets, etc. As sevenfoldtie often says, Alden's best models are often its stock models in black and color 8.

2) Don't overlook suede and chromexcel.

And I will reiterate it again here - without equivocation. biggrin.gif

There is much truth spoken above by the two gentlemen. nod[1].gif

These look like J Crew's standard #8 punched cap toe boot. They frequently restock these on their website.

The Cigar (Barrie) and Ravello (Aberdeen) were graciously sold to me by REGuy. Despite not having been worn much yet, the Cigar is easily my favorite. In color, fit, and contour of the toe stitching, it is essentially perfect to my tastes. I'll be taking these to the grave. The Ravello is a beautiful shade, though a bit less versatile, and the fit is merely very good. However, I don't see myself ever giving these up either.

And that brings me to the the Whiskey. This pair was my first NST purchase as well as my first Barrie purchase. I'm a TTS 10.5D, so the rarity of Whiskey led me to give them a shot in Barrie 10E. Upon trying them out, I thought the fit was pretty good. However, after buying and wearing the Cigar NST, Cigar LWB, and CXL Dover—all in Barrie 10D—I realize that going with a 10E was a bit more of a compromise than I originally expected. While they fit pretty well, I'm wondering if the better fit and greater color versatility of my other models will result in the Whiskey pair sitting in a closet rarely worn. Any thoughts?
YESSSSSSSSS. That is wonderful. I think all 3 colors are great. I have never tried nsts on the Barrie. Aberdeen and plaza lasts fit me perfectly for some reason tts. Thanks for posting, I've been wanting to see these side by side.

But the darker mahogany shade of the Ravello in this picture appears to be a close cousin of the old RL Marlows/Daltons. I miss the old Ravello shades from Alden. Alden seems to have embraced darker shades of color #8, Ravello, and cigar...

My favorite this week so far. :slayer: I'd love to see this one next to your Cigar LWB.

I'm really interested to see how the Cigar turns out on the upcoming batch of LWBs from Alden NYC in a few months. I think that will be a good litmus test for "all future batches of Cigar will continue to be darker than older batches" vs "the last few batches of Cigar were dark, but the color varies from batch to batch and they could be dark or light depending on the batch of shells from Horween"

I love it Mike. Ravello and argyles with cuffed slacks is a fantastic combo.

I have been wearing them for the past few months and loving every minute. It is difficult to see but the crease on the right shoe has a lighter color in the fold. I think it looks great the only issue is that it is not doing the same on the left shoe. The shoe has not been treated other than brushing. Is this normal?

I also have several Allen Edmonds shell belts and those are pretty good too.
