Always glad to enable my fellow Alden wearer!

Indeed I work a few blocks over from Alden DC so it's not a problem to pop in and give them a try.  I'll just need to somehow convince my wife that they're worth it if they fit.  The whole, "but they last a lifetime" doesn't have much tread left.  She reminds me that I now have enough shoes for several lifetimes.

The epiphany I've had over the last couple months here is that you just need to own your sickness to your wife. Re-soleability, resaleability, patina, elegance, timelessness or any other reasoning can sound to our significant others as a plain and simple rationalization. Just tell her you're doing it and live with the eye roll for a couple days.

Here's hoping I'm still married in 2014 after I take my Christmas trip to Leffot for some EGs...

Looking forward to seeing your cigar boot acquisition!

I have had to explain the many lifetimes of aldens as well... the argument is getting thin indeed.

Transparency is truly the way to go. When I turned over that leaf, I found that my wife was actually quite lovely about it, saying things like, "Don't worry about it so much. You work hard and it's not such a terrible thing." I'm imagining that my guilt and cover up machinations implicitly communicated that there was something bad afoot.

They're shoes, not narcotics!

Gents,

Pick three of four to keep...

Cigar Longwings with Antique Soles
Alden 975 (Color 8 longwings with dark sole)
Leffot Color 8 Longwings with antique sole
Leffot Color 8 / Alpine Grain Saddle Shoes

This give you the most diverse color selection and eliminates the two LWB's with antique

A question for those who own or have owned unlined cordovan PTBs... Don't they feel a lot less "solid" on your feet than traditional PTBs or other Alden lined cordovan shoes? My 990s feel a lot more substantial and solid on my feet than my unlined black PTBs. I like the unlined/flex welt feel on more models like suede dovers and chukkas but I'm not sure how much I like the unlined feel as we go through winter.

+1, by substantial I take it you mean heavier, supportive, stable, etc...  I absolutely agree; I prefer the oak tanned traditional (JR) double leather soles for this reason.

Yeah, I pretty quickly came to the same conclusion as you guys. The opportunity to preorder the cigar from Alden NYC makes this an easy choice.

Yea i will try to request it and printed out a picture of my preference look of the shoe in the packing. worth a shot

Does Alden us JR soles? Heard it mentioned a couple of times but haven't found any support elsewhere.
Also, Jos A. Bank shoe trees are $8.50 with free shipping right now. I know these have been mentioned by other forum members in the past but the thread search function is maddening and I can't located any comments. What is the verdict on these in both quality and cost?
Cedar shoe racks are $11.90 as well.
