Welcome to the thread. You must have some good taste with the Chukkas and Longwings. I actually haven't gotten the Color 8 LWB yet, but I did sport my Color 8 Chukka yesterday. I like those shoes, but they don't get as much wear, I need to fix that.

I just purchased a pair of Alden plain toe suede bluchers and noticed the outside sole has a "defect."

I place the word defect in quotes because I am not sure if I should return these shoes.

There is a space in the outside sole where the black colored part of the heel connects to the brown section.

The two parts don't fit like a puzzle, one side is slightly misaligned, leaving a small 1/2 cm empty space.

In other words, the black exterior sole section of the heels is not straight. It was not cut straight on one side, and as a result doesn't "fit."

I am at work and don't have a picture yet so I post this picture from the web. Tonight when I get home I will take a picture of the shoe to show you.

I am wondering if this can cause any issue, like stuff getting stuck in the space, and if I should return the shoe.

Thanks.

I've had a couple like that and never had an issue. As long as the heel is solid and flush on the outside edges, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks mike! Definitely gotta get your color 8 chukkas more wear. I find them to be the most versatile shoe I own.

Is this a defect?

Why do the cobblers at Alden permit such a misalignment of the sole in the production process? How hard is it to cut a piece of the leather sole straight!?

I'm concerned stuff will get stuck in the space, crap? Have you had any issue? So you do not recommend a return?

Black captoe boots on Grant. Wet outside, business casual until 5, will throw on a blazer and tie for an event tonight, these boots are appropriate for all of these situations. The 4060/4065 are great models...

We really need pics before anyone opine intelligently on your issue.

Took the #8 plain toe high lace boots out in the rain today... the little water marks/bumps are a bit disconcerting but they'll dry... they'll dry right?!?

If they have another size, you could exchange but may end up with another minor issue that isn't on the bottom. Here's a recent one for me, and it is solid. No issues on older ones that had more wear.

They'll dry!!

Relax...that horse was probably a mudder anyways.

I used to worry about water marks, but they go away with drying and continued brushing/wearing of the shoes/boots. Use leather defender on new pairs to help prevent them from every happening.

Those look great.. the Grant last seems to be just the right shape for that style.

Is that the TSM model?

Re: the dovetail heel issue, that looks a little bit more of a gap than most, but not egregious.  The leather piece is going to swell and get beat up over time, so it's not going to be as noticeable IMO.

I wish I had a shoe pic for today, but the weather's miserable here so it's Bean boot time.

Same here -- miserable all week, barely getting into the teens. Times like these get the Bean boots.

ILSC,

Welcome to the forum. While I understand your question, I believe your concern is misplaced. I do not think a small space in the heel causes any problems. If you are so concerned about this issue, you can have the heel and rubber dovetail replaced by a local cobbler or Alden, which is a simple fix and likely unnecessary.  Ultimately, after significant wear, the entire sole will need to be replaced anyway.

If you want absolute perfection and have uncompromising standards for footwear, you should probably consider MTO or bespoke shoes.

Cheers.
