I think you're right, Seven, but it's difficult after giving my wife the larger closet space in the house. I'm storing the collection in a small home office closet using AE's large-sized cedar racks. It's great that they're stackable, but Alden boots (of which I have more than 10) only fit on the top racks. Maybe I just need to get some long dowels so I can stack on a second boot level. Right now, boots of less frequent wear (such as Indys, which are great but always get trumped by wingtip boots) end up hidden in side shelves within the closet. Clearly we need a bigger house for the growing collection--jk; this again is why I'm a fan of Alcibiades' 20-Alden intention.

For me, the problem is more of a working memory issue. When I'm running late in the morning and trying to configure an outfit with the least amount of mental energy, it's easy to do classics or tried-and-true combinations (or combinations I've cut and pasted from Mr DV or DonL's pics :) Accordingly, I often pull out selvedge jeans, a tweed blazer and a color 8 shoe or boot of some kind. I've kind of defaulted to trying to actively plan days where the lower frequency shoes will get worn. For example, I went with the cigar ptbs today after realizing I hadn't worn them since no-sock season. Now that I think of it, unlined snuff suede chukkas have been nowhere in sight for months. Probably will go with those when it hits 60 degrees here in NJ later in the week.

Speaking of NJ, I'm wondering if any folks are taking time off during the holiday season and planning to be in the Manhattan area at all. I'm planning a day off for myself with no work or family responsibilities and it seemed like a fun idea to maybe do an Alden tour (maybe Leffot to Alden NYC to Citishoes to Epaulet or something of the sort); I was thinking it would be fun to meet up with thread folks and maybe catch a cocktail while comparing patinas and edge colors...

Love these boots, Namor. Yet another case when I say..."oh yea, I have those".

According to UPS, they should have received them yesterday. See my old posts for pics if interested.

Thanks, very interested, will call tomorrow.

I'm going to get an early start on a new year's resolution...Which is reducing my Alden collection to a manageable number... I've discussed this with some forum members on PM, and it is probably the right thing to do, especially as I add some non-Aldens (Viberg, Edward Green, Marlows, etc) to the rotation.

I am reducing my Alden pairs to 20 by the end of this year with a goal of getting to a maximum of 16 Aldens by the end of 2014. I will continue to buy them, but only on on a one shoe in, one shoe out basis. Excess shoes will be sold, donated, handed down, etc.

My thought is I will have twenty "slots" in my Alden rotation:
Four cordovan work laceups
Four cordovan high boots
Four cordovan casual laceups
Eight seasonal shoes (random mix of styles and leathers, focusing on chukkas/boots, loafers, suede, cxl, etc)

Initially, there will actually be twenty shoes fitting these slots. However, by the end of 2014, four shoes will fill double duty, which should get me to 16 pairs. Which shoes stay and go will be determined by actual wear patterns across the seasons.

As part of this effort I will be putting some shoes up on eBay/marketplace this weekend...

Thanks, Alcibiades, for posting this and sharing your thoughts/goals on this tough subject.  I've been thinking about this too and have posted complaints that I like my boots to have a worn-in look and they just weren't getting there because I've been buying too many.  You have given me the impetus to put a specific plan together like you have.

Great input!

To tell the truth, I just bought some of those racks and extenders a couple weeks ago.

These look great -- Alpine grain on Plaza last from JGilbert, just saw them on Alden of Carmel's site.  Tempting.

If I'm a 9D in my indys, is it safe to assume I'll also be a 9d in the Barrie last?

^ Most likely, though some will beg to differ.  My Barrie and Indy (Trubalance) sizes are identical.

SFTG, would you mind sharing how many pairs you have of each: JL, EG, AC, AE, C&J, Alden?

I would venture to guess your collection is second only to the "Uncle's."
