There is a loose string where the quarter meets the vamp (terminology?). and you can see an empty stitching hole where it came out of. It seems to be stable, but my worry is that it will continue to unravel, as this seems to be a high stress area of the shoe (hence why it is double stitched there).

Hopefully you guys will tell me that it is nothing, and I can start wearing the shoes without waiting months for an exchange.

Thanks
I'm pretty sure a couple pair of my Alden look like that. Never concerned myself with it. Enjoy your boots!

Few things

ATLVol - I visited Sid Mashburn for the first time this weekend. Outstanding store. I got a tie and some socks there, I will likely grab some of their double monks in the future.

Yazman - that is one of the most common Alden issues - it usually doesn't have a structural impact on the shoe. I have had pairs like that. If it bothers you, see if J Crew has a similar model in stock, but most will say just keep the boots and enjoy them.

Alden has a very loyal following as I cannot imagine another brand that would result in advice being given that this is an acceptable defect. This looks like more than loose stitching to me since it looks like there is a visible gap in the leather caused by the defect. If it was cosmetic, I would keep them but it looks structural to me.

As a relative Alden newbie, I still remember the excitement of my first new pair of shells. It was tough sending them back but I couldn't imagine paying over $600 for a pair of shoes that I didn't love. Those are really nice boots and if you love them then keep them but do it with the awareness that your issue may be more than cosmetic. I am a believer is consistent and vigorous brushing of shell and with those it seems like I would always be working around the area in question. Over time that alone would likely make me question my decision.

You do realize that unipair guy is a paid SF affiliate versus TSM which isn't.

Fine looking dress shoe Uncle.  I believe they are next on my list of Aldens to purchase.  Hope all is going well...

Someone had asked about them and where they could be found.  I have no problem with Unipair responding to the request.

In fact, I doubt anyone here would have a problem with Alden retailers posting announcements about new stock and their arrival, especially when it comes to shell cordovan.  Not sure though, if that violates any SF rules??

The more people know where to get Alden models, the better. People tend to post anytime new models are available anyway, I don't see harm in letting retailers to the same. A number of posters (including myself) are basically unpaid advertisers for Leffot, Unionmade, etc.

I like unipair's posts and he is very helpful over PM, keep it up

SF might hit them up and ask them to pay to become an affiliate or refrain from "advertising".  Not an expert though.

Agreed.  No issues with a retailer chiming in and I also find Unipair to be very responsive and helpful.
