These are breaking in wonderfully. It's amazing how much narrower the heel is on the modified last. The TruBalance last is just so wide in the heel it's ridiculous, I don't know how anyone can actually fit into it.

These have been Crane's method treated, with Lexol for oil and Obenauf's LP for waterproofing. They are a lovely golden brown color right now, probably a little bit darker than they look in the pics. These are being worn as real boots, since I have to go from office to dirt/mud/snow/sand/wet on a daily basis depending on the weather.

Very nice. I really want to try the modified last - just need to narrow down the choices to a particular shoe or boot.

Although the #8 perf cap toe bals are 3 for 3 in wearings for compliments.

Green Irish Tweed is good stuff. I am more of an Aventus guy myself.

Good news, you don't have very many choices to choose from! Basically a plain toe boot from TSM, or whatever Moulded Shoe happens to have in stock. They order one pair in each size/color/width combination every year. I was just lucky they had exactly my size/width in exactly the color and style I wanted when I got there. Seriously, the modified last is one of those get what they have when it's available kinds of things.

I think they are fantastic and recommend them.  Not sure I would like this style on a sleeker last.  Barrie works well for this model

It's been mentioned here before, but most co-workers believe I have a big ALDO collection. I try to enunciate "alden", but they hear what they want to hear.

The worst!!!

I love Aventus- actually just finished a bottle of it!

Now that it's below 40 outside, I've switched over to Musc Ravageur for nighttime.

Thanks - I've been looking at these for a while -

Alden NYC:
Cordovan Algonquin Blucher
Moulded:
Burnished Calfskin Boot
Brown CXL PCT Boot
Brown Suede Plain Toe Boot
Natural CXL Indy Boot
Brown CXL Indys

Might start with the Algonquin in shell and see what happens.

tifosi - in case you haven't seen it, there's also a winged boot at Alden NYC (style 4461) - http://www.aldenmadison.com/SHELL3.html

I have seen that. They don't have my size, sadly.

Regarding the discussion about scarcity of shell cordovan causing the long delays for orders: I used to attribute the long delays entirely to the rumoured scarcity, especially for things like whiskey and ravello, but like others have noted, now that color #8 output is slowing down and so is suede, I think much more of the delay probably comes from capacity at the Alden factory. I've also heard over the last couple of years that work to shoes being sent in to Alden is also beginning to slow down.

It seems like Alden is getting much more publicity over the past few years, and there is a general trend back towards higher quality menswear. Alden management may see this as possibly no more than a fad and could be reticent to higher more production staff or increase capacity in other ways fearing that the trend will not continue for the long-term. They'd probably rather just ride the wave and continue increasing prices where they can and seeing how much the consumer is willing to put up with before demand begins to suffer. Let's remember, this is a 130-year-old company that has survived the collapse of the once-thriving New England apparel and footwear industry. They didn't last this long by making rash decisions.

I don't contend that scarcity plays no part in the delays, I just think much more of the hold up is on Alden's end.

As for my three pair that garner the most compliments from women:
  • Brown alpine grain LWB from FransBoone
  • Snuff suede 4-eyelet moccasins
  • #8 wingtip boots

Far and away, the leader in the compliments regard, is the alpine grain LWB. The other two listed above are basically also-rans.

The only pair that my wife has ever complimented me on is my #8 and alpine grain saddle shoes.
