So just picked up the longwings in #8, but need to get a belt to match. Is the consensus to pick up the Alden #8 belt? Any other suggestions that won't set me back an additional 200+?

You can get a BB shell belt, which often looks more like a no. 6 shade, for less during their sales.

what's the best way to reach alden customer service? I have a pair of captoes that have a slight fit irregularity that I only noticed after I started wearing them. I trie emailing the general@aldenshoe.com email address but never heard back.

Call them and when you inevitably get their voicemail leave them a message, they actually do get back to you rather quickly. When I finally left a message I received a call back within 4 hours probably and they were great to work with over the phone.

of course someone posts a picture of worn leather tips the day i get these:

Ravello longwings with a crepe sole, Barrie last. we had some bad weather in SF a couple weeks ago (which is backwards for this place but that's beside the point) and it hit me... get an all-weather walker! so the search began. some website had them in CXL but not in my size. ShoeMart and the Alden shop here have them in my size but in black or tan calf. snooze. then i checked Alden of Carmel, and decided to see what they had in Ravello. BAM! there it was! and now here it is

if that overworn leather tip IS from improper drying i shouldn't have a problem. i never wear a pair of Aldens two days in a row

I personally would not have gone for the crepe sole on Ravello but I have these:

Wear them a lot and have not seen this issue. I also have a pair of boots with the crepe sole but they get a lot less wear. Imma gonna check tonight and if I see anything I will post. I will keep an eye out for this and wear these in light rain. I am not expecting to see any issues.

I had the same thought at you. I picked up a pair of Alden shells with the crepe sole as my wet weather shoes. The first time I wore them the shell welted like it had small pocks. I've worn the shoes 4 times in the rain and my toe is super worn down - though not as bad as the previous post. I've seen other posts complaining about the toe pulling away where it meets the crepe sole, which happened to me as well. I never wore my shoes on consecutive days.

I question the idea that Alden shell + crepe sole makes for a good rain shoe. I would suggest you be careful with your shoes and think about using something else for rainy day duty. Sorry to be a bummer.

How does one prevent this from happening, aside from keeping moisture off of one's shoes? I notice this happening on my shell shoes too, although I thought it was from another liquid that splashed on my shoe, not water.

no way, man. it's all good. i'd much rather hear about your experiences than just some hearsay and conjecture. i've read about the possibility of welts popping up when shell gets wet. the advice was just to let them air dry and the welts should subside. what happened in your case? that being said, i knew i was taking on some amount of risk when choosing a shell shoe for foul weather. but hey, i'm a risky guy Ahab - beautiful wing-tips! i think i know what you mean about choosing a crepe sole on Ravello (dress vs casual?) but for me it was like this: what i wanted was the crepe sole. so it wasn't like i was trying to find Ravello and i could only find a shoe with a crepe sole; i was looking for a crepe sole and the nicest one i could find was in Ravello edit - i just wanted to echo the sentiment... The Agatine Eyelet blog is the shizz

+1. I have 3 pairs of Alden now. The only pair that didn't come with the bags was my Indy 405.

I did as you see on the forum: I waited for them to dry completely and then brushed, and brushed, and brushed. This went on for a month or so. Giving them a 30 minute brushing every few days.

The welts got somewhat better - maybe 30% improvement - but the effort was ridiculous. These shoes were black shell, so you keep that in mind. After all the pointless brushing I took Lexol leather conditioner and completely covered every surface of the shoes. This caused the entire shoe to welt more or less uniformly. Then I sort of massaged the previously welted areas. As the Lexol dried the welts receded a good deal. After this I treated my shoes with Alden black shoe cream to give them some shine.

This pair seems to be about 85% recovered from the welting but there is some evidence. Even so they are my least favorite pair of shoes. Every time I look them I think of people recommending shell for rainy weather and shake my head.

I'm not sure if I got unlucky or what, but it seems like the vast majority of my shells welt when they come in contact with any amount of liquid. Be mindful of the toe on your shoes as well if you intend to walk in the rain. Mine wore down at an amazing rate. The crepe sole is comfortable for standing around, but I doubt I'd ever get another pair for rainy day use.

although it literally looks like the leather tip is melting off on both shoes, the other isnt as bad as the one i posted, heck it isnt even torn off at all. The crepe hardly looks worn, aside from your typical small pealings off the side that i know is normal, but wow, was hoping these could sub in as my main rain/fall/winter boot. Wore them 2 consecitive days because it rained on both and I guess I never thought of leaving it somewhere to dry, just stayed on my floor.

^I'd just wear 'em to the bone then send them back to Alden for a restoration service. May want to consider going commando instead of having them put on another crepe sole.
