Hmmm. Everyone agrees there's a difference; one for keeping; and another for returning. I figure I'll take them out into the natural light tomorrow morning and see how they look there. I will, of course, keep you all updated.

The cadet, being a perforated cap toe really goes with suits and, perhaps, business casual.  The PTB can go from sport coats to jeans.

Should be 8.5D. If you are going to wear very thin dress socks, perhaps even an 8D.

tried for a moment, then hit with a brush.

which reminds me, the two brushes from AE, ever after being ran under a faucet, still produce an almost instant haze on the shoe when used. weirdest thing I've seen

Did it work?  If not, rub with reno/venetian. I have a pair of Color 8s that always get lighter in the creases, even though they can't really be considered new anymore.  Rubbing with reno/venetian makes it go way... until I walk in them again.  Its getting kind of annoying really, but I have faith that at some point they will start to behave themselves.

I washed mine with dish washing soap and it seems to have solved the hazing problem.

I also would like to know how to handle the white buildup in the creases. Brushing does not seem to work.

Mine do this too! I've heard that throwing some RenoMat on the brushes will remove the residue. I have yet to do this yet.

Kwhitelaw,

I believe that this is referred to as "blooming" and is very common with new Shell Cordovan. It is essentially the oils and stuff rising to the surface. (This is what I was told by Robert of Alden SF when I was there many months ago...)

As others have referred to, a simple wiping with a cloth should cover it... If it still decides to persist, than a light brushing would be in order. Enjoy your new shells!

Also, hopefully this photo shows the color difference a bit:

The right shoe (on the left in the photo) has a red translucent look going on in the toe area. The other shoe is more of a solid brown. Am I just being nuts here, or is there a noticeable difference? And, if so, will the difference become less noticeable with time?

If that pic is a true representation of the color, I would not keep them.

Wow, there has been some beautiful Ravello shoes in here lately... Some very fine examples of Chukkas, PTBs, and LWBs... Enjoy your shoes!

What I mean specifically is pics of shell cordovan Alden's that have been through rain and snow and dirt and mud, etc. Pics of shoes where people didn't worry about rain spots leaving their trace on shell cordovan.

How about this pair of shoes?
