I understand from a business perspective why LS does this, they could conceivably get many more orders than just ordering stock and waiting for it to come in, but I will likely not participate again. I so prefer the Leffot method of waiting for a confirmation and then knowing there is likely a 6-9 month horizon. My real issue though is with Alden, not LS. I cannot fathom how it could take 2+ years to build a simple suede longwings. I have spent my career working in various manufacturing facilities and there is a serious issue with this. They should either reduce the number of retails or increase production. There is a lot of competition in the market place and Alden is currently missing out on a lot of revenue as well as running the risk of alienating their consumer base. While there may be no short term effect from this, there will certainly likely be a long-term one. Whenever a business loses sight of what is important and thinks demand will always simply be there because of who they are, things change...Just ask Tim Cook about their landscape compared to 5 years ago

The fact that Alden is making shoes for J.Crew is not a really good for the smaller volume retailers. I would assume J.Crew has some stringent delivery requirements on their suppliers. Guess who's orders would have to be pushed back when production falls behind.

Leffot's "pre-sale deposit" system is great for those with normal size/width requirements. But not so if someone needs a 6C, 9EEE or a 12C. LS's or Epaulet's "pre-order" system does accommodate those needs.

Considering the retail profit margin is somewhere in the vicinity of 50%, the retailers should be equally frustrated as the pre-order customers. No products, no sales, no profits.

I believe you can e-mail Leffot during the pre-sale window for non-common sizes

The J Crew impact continues to be a bit overstated here, IMO. J Crew sells Aldens in a limited amount of urban stores, online and in the catalogue... What Alden shoes they do sell appear to be widely available (CXL Indy boots) or exclusives (Tobacco and Brown Calf Longwings). I guess they do sell some other suede and cordovan models, but it is not like J Crew is getting a bunch of rare cordovan orders while smaller retailers are not. Even when they do get rarer shoes (like the ravello longwings with brass eyelets), they aren't even widely sold. Brooks Brothers has been selling Aldens for years. I think it is just pure supply and demand.

This reminds me of the time I returned a pair of Alden plain toe boots at the King of Prussia mall outside Philly. I don't think anyone working there had ever seen Aldens in person just by the way the store's sales associates had the boots out of the box in no time and passed them around like something sacred.

But yeah, very rarely does it ever seem like J.Crew has any of their shell collection in stock minus the unusual sizes. It's not uncommon for them to extend their backordered ship dates, either, in my experience.

I heard that. When it looks that good, you don't need a reason. Nicely done.

Awhile back, I came across a pair of camouflage shoe bags.. now I can't find them in my bookmarks. my OCD keeps me trying to differentiate my various manufacturers, and my singular pair of wolverines I just grabbed would work best for these me thinks.

anyone got a line of a pair? I'm almost confident they were USA made, so even better.

thanks in advance brethren!

Didn't see anyone answer this yet. Try this:

Good points, indeed supply and demand.

Yes, Leffot does take "pre-orders" for non-common sizes, but those do not fall in the "confirmed" allocations. There might not be any lead time advantage.

We, the consumers may want to believe otherwise, but in reality, I don't think shell shoes take absolute priority in the production queue. Shell or non-shell, exotic or not, if production is backlogged, even if they have the material, they can't catch up. I think there is already indication that it is happening even for non-shell models.

Thanks MrDV, the Plaza last plain toe boots are going to get a lot of wear this Fall. I've been slowly breaking them in.

Happened to be wearing the JG #8 Plaza last boots when the Naval (Barrie last) boots arrived. FYI they are both 10.5
Absolutely awesome boots you have there good sir. Which boot fits you better, plaza or barrie? Wear them in the best of health.

Who wouldn't have trouble deciding between two very nice pairs of boots.

I agree with my friend BeSpiff, both are excellent boots.  Quick question though, is it me, or do the barrie lasted naval boots look sleeker and even slightly more narrow than the plaza lasted color 8 boots?

I'd be happy to possess either (or both)!

Hey guys,

Any leads on a #8 or Cigar long/short wing on something a bit sleeker than Barrie? (e.g. the "one-shoe")

I'm willing to wait but I'd like to lock something in soon if possible.

Right now, I'm pretty close to trying this Carmina pair, but I wouldn't mind something a bit darker as I already have something in the shade shown.

I'd also try some Marlows if I had easier access to them...
