Fit question -
How does the Alden Chukka (Barrie last) fit compare to the LWB (also Barrie)?
Should I expect the chukka to fit about the same?

I have a shell LWB and a chromexcel chukka ( both barrie-r) . The LWB is snug in all aspects of fit. The chukka on the otherhand is a little more roomy. I'm not talking more heel slip or anything like that, just a little more freedom in the toe box. Probably becaus there is no lacing across the vamp. You dont feel as "locked in" in the chukka.
However it's not drastic enough to change your sizing from the LWB to the Chukka if they are both barrie...hope that helps.

Thanks, that makes sense.

I have both LWBs and Chukkas and agree. I would also add that the Chukka's feel more roomy because there are less lace holes holding your foot in place in the Chukka. I usually tie my Chukka's a bit more tightly as a result - this is where getting the right size on the Barrie makes a huge difference in fit and amount of creasing with cordovan.

Pimp my Aldens?

I own the Cordovan #8 Indy Boot seen here...

http://www.theshoemart.com/cgi-bin/...ALD_m_INDY_BOOT_SHELL_CORDOVAN&color=Color 8#

But I want to sand down the sides of the wood slips in the heel so that they are not blacked out and look more like they do in the Alden Whiskey Shell Cordovan Indy Boot seen here.... (check out the side view to see what I'm talking about)....

http://www.theshoemart.com/cgi-bin/...tem_image&sku=ALD_m_40566C&color=Cigar Shell#

Is this possible? Risky? Crazy? Bold? Or is it simply genius....

Debate.

I admire your moxie and love the look of antique edge trim. Makes the shoe/boot.

The thing is that the welt will still be a much darker color and the shoe will look unbalanced as a result. That would certainly be a bold look but would ruin the flow of the boot for me.

Having said that, we all have different tastes and come from differing perspectives. If it appeals to you and you have considered the visual drawbacks, go forth and provide pics to the thread if you can.

Kippy already noted the obvious drawback of not changing the welt. Of course sometimes Alden does that themselves. http://www.stitchedandstitched.com/?p=1856

Anyway, here goes http://www.styleforum.net/t/247209/diy-cobbler-ing-changing-sole-edge-color

Namor had some step-by-step of what he did somewhere or other.
Here are the results

I personally would have a pro do it and also change out the welt.

I prefer the edging be black on a color 8 shoe personally. It tends to look 'unfinished' otherwise and doesn't seem to blend in as well as antique edging on other colors.
