Also I think the commando soles are a huge plus to the shoes so it is a personal preference.

In my experience (and take it for what it's worth from a guy who owns about 10 pairs of Aldens) is that shell cordovan shoes fit about 0.25 size larger than its calf counterpart. So it may be just a tad roomier but not so much to warrant getting a larger size. Again the best option is to try a pair on in an Alden store and purchase the exact pair that you tried on and you know fits you well. Of course I only done that once so I understand where all the questions about sizing comes from.

Thanks MiniW. Yeah, I've tried the shells on and it wouldn't be an issue if the calf was a bit tighter. So, from your description the same size in the black calf would work well. Actually, I think the Indys I was referring to were Pegasus (black calf). They were very soft though. I tried them on at the DC Alden shop.

thx again.

OK, You may not like the answers I am going to give and they are not the only ones.

First is that this may never get better but I cannot see anything in the picture and it is on the inside of your shoe where I doubt anyone will notice it.

Second, ride it out. It may be a wax buildup and 40-50 minutes of brushing will clear it up.

Third, and this is debatable. Take a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water, get a clean cotton cloth and SLIGHTLY dampen it with the solution. Rub, rub, rub. Then rub of the residue with a clean dry cloth and brush.

I hope that helps.

^^^ Thanks for the info. I'll try this. I buffed so long this morning that my arm got sore.

It might not be obvious in the picture, but the area that looks like it's a light reflection is actually the burnish I'm talking about. It looks like whatever Alden uses as a finish has rubbed off. Maybe I'm actually rubbing it away somehow?

If it doesn't go away, I figure I might have to just live with it, then when it comes time to get the shoes refurbished, have the finish re-done.

#8 Shell with Black Shell Saddle. Barrie last preferred. Exposed metal eyelets a definite.
Ravello with Cigar Saddle would be cool too but #8 is preferred and easier so do it!

I love those saddles. I missed out on them the first time around; won't make that mistake again!

Hmmm.....try a "little" wax fist. you do not want to try this where there is no finish.

Me neither. If Tom glances at the blog for this shoe there are some other recent requests for it and none of them are mine.

C'Mon Tom! I want to be the first in my neighborhood with saddle shoes!

Just got these PTB's shipped direct from Alden.
Took them outside for close examination and noticed right off a big blotchy area on the outside heel of right shoe.
Is this typical of #8? This was taken in direct sunlight. I'm all for the uneven fading that occurs over time but not sure I'm happy with this. Would this be considered a defect?

I'm not an expert but I'd consider sending it back for a replacement. Good luck!
Yeah, I'm considering an exchange and I bought them from a very reputable dealer so an exchange won't be a problem. The thing is I don't want to waste time doing an exchange if this is indeed typical of #8 because I'd end up getting a pair with similar issues. You can't see it indoors but is easy to spot in sunlight. I'm going to send the pic to the dealer and get their take on it.

The #8's I have and seen typically do not have spots like that. I think it will be worth your time to go for an exchange.

That's definitely a defect and you should take them back pronto.

What ever happened to the leathersoul chromexcel jumpers? Anyone get a pair? I was excited to see them and now I can't even find them on the LS site.

These are a preorder. I don't think Tom's received them yet, hence no pix. Can't wait to get my pair.
