When/how will they answer that question then?

My one LS purchase was done entirely via email. LSW helped me locate a pair of Brown CXL Pitt boots at LSBH.

It wasn't immediate but the service was great. Was also the way I purchased from Leffot and AoC in the past.

I'm very happy with the Snuff Suede Safari Boots I bought from Leather Soul. Tom and Bryan were cordial and very helpful throughout my entire purchase. I corresponded online several times to both and spoke to Bryan at length on a couple of occasions. He did not seem hurried on the phone or made me feel like I was wasting his time. I don't have a large budget for shoes. The Alden cordovan that I have purchased was either gently worn (SF classified), seconds (TSM) or on sale (JCrew). I would buy from LS again. I understand that their limited runs never make it to the forum, but like posted before by others, those LTDs always sell out...

Wore my new whiskey LWBs the other day.

It was a difficult thing to do since that meant removing them from beneath my Sherlock Holmes detector magnifying glass and putting them way down on my feet where it is very hard for me to see any flaws in the stitching or punching or welting or finish. :)

Seriously, that scratch we've all been reading about is very unfortunate, Renton, on a pair of shoes you've been waiting for and that will be very hard to replace in any timely manner. Sorry to see it and it would bother me, though I'm not sure what I'd do in your place. Hope you can work it out to your satisfaction.

After months of waiting, my new pair of whiskey lwb arrived from the shoemart. While looking over the shoes, I couldn't help but notice this:

Looks like these are heading back to CT.

The missing punch hole is an interesting flaw and indicates a flaw in the cutting die itself I believe. Any other LWB owners notice this on their shoe? I would assume Alden has several die sets for these cut-outs so not every shoe would hit the defective die but there's got to be others.

BTW--I would live with the scratch but I would not be happy about it. I would write Artie a letter but the interminable wait for a replacement pair (if that was even an option) would negate sending them back for that defect unless the cut was deeper.

Kippy/Burton:

You both make some good points but in this internet age, a vendor like LS who posts an extensive store front on the net has to understand that they will get calls from people attempting to order online, just like every other internet storefront out there. As much as LS says they are not an online store, their blog posts imply otherwise as new arrivals are prominently posted (with prices) and the comments under each post display people inquiring about size availability, etc., and they have done enough pre-orders to add to the confusion as well. LS, Epaulet, Leffot, etc all seem to run successful businesses so hats off to them, and they certainly have established local clientele--enough anyway where I realize they don't need my money to be successful. But it is frustrating to see beautiful shoes advertised and not be able to buy them.

Of course most of my frustration stems from being a B/C width, so none of their normal offerings will work for me anyway.

I often wonder if people realize the ridiculousness of their thoughts. Obviously, we all pay good money and want our shoes to look good. However, when you're at the urinal what should you really be more concerned about, your missing perf hole or the fact that you're standing in a puddle of someone else's piss? It's important to keep things in perspective. In the end, they're just shoes.

One more thing...SHOES CREASE! My head is going to explode if I read one more comment about "how do I stop my shoes from creasing?" There's more of this over on the Allen Edmonds thread, but people really have to relax.

Well said, Kippy. Your experience has been similar to mine with LS and although I have purchased a couple of Aldens from LS, my experience with them has always been as if they were doing me a favor by selling me $700 shoes. That's why I HAVE voted with my wallet and prefer to deal with Mike at Epaulet and Steven at Leffot for my Alden needs. Neither of those shops are 'web' stores, but they still seem happy to serve customers outside a limited 'local' reach with superior customer service.

From LS's perspective, the $700 shoe market is probably not where they want to spend the majority of their energy. Aside from Quoddy (and perhaps Tricker's? depends on the shoe) Alden is the least expensive brand they sell. I'm sure they would be more interested in a customer right away if they were looking for Lobbs or EGs.

Not defending this position, merely stating it as conjecture. I do not purchase from LS because none of their special makeups have ever appealed to me (mainly because they tend to make shoes on the Barrie, Plaza, and Trubalance lasts, which are my least favorite Alden lasts).

I think that's a fair question to ask though, since afaik most special makeups are done on D width lasts.

The one time I did contact LS, I e-mailed with Tom about his having either C-width Barrie shoes, or non-loafer shoes on the Aberdeen last, and he was very gracious. It's definitely a fair question to ask about special widths and lasts, and it's unfortunate that the poster previously had a bad experience looking for E widths -- which I imagine is a more common request than for C widths.

By the way, with respect to the SSENSE banner ad that appears in the rotation up top--why is the bald guy smelling his pits?

That's the only way anyone ever purchases Alden of Carmel - they're an email only internet company (despite the name).

I'm not sure the quote is attributed correctly... stupid multi-quoting.

As I recall, it was in the context of some one calling up and wanting them to recite everything they have in stock of a specific size.

Been looking at the AldenxEpaulet Indy Officer's Boot, as my "waiting for funds to finance Alden purchase" stage continues until next paycheck.

So many options. Which to choose?
