Just in this week -- snuff suede short wings (flex sole, Hampton last) from Leather Soul. They are actually darker than the photo indicates. Snuff plain toe boots on the way from LS. It's a snuffy week.
I know one reason is because while they are still stiff, walking on concrete results in accelerated wear on the toe of the sole because of increased friction from the way that one is caused to walk by stiff shoes.
This is the main reason I've heard. That is, if the soles are stiff, they will not bend as much, which will create more wear on the toe portion of the sole. I've worn some AEs for the first time without much carpet wear, and definitely noticed some wear at the toes. So, I had taps put on, but now that they're broken in, it doesn't seem like the taps are getting much wear. This suggests that if I had just broken them in on carpet (or at least with minimal pavement exposure initially), taps would not have been necessary.
^^^I love my whiskey indy boot, and if I didn't have a closet full of shoes, I'd jump on them. It's on a double leather sole and dresses up much better than the traditional one. Also, the hand-stitched moc toe looks sick as hell. Think hard on it. This would be fine for the office if it will blend with your standard wardrobe. Probably not the best fit with incotex super slim pants and the like, but it you wear slim fit or regular fit, get them. You will like.
