Just picked up my Aldens from the shop and am extremely pleased with the results. These are my 2 year old Alden for Unionmade Loden green ranger-moccs on the Van last. I thought I would get more wear out of them if I customized them a little so I took them to Pioneer Renewer in San Francisco who has a great reputation for doing good work. I had them replace the waterlock sole with a Vibram wedge and also had them put in the brass eyelets to add a little flavor. They did a great job and the whole thing cost $110 out the door. I definitely reccomend Pioneer Renewer.

enjoy wearing in good health
the outer soles use damp cloth and then apply neutral outer sole dressing

Also, you lose the nice thick back that keeps the butt end of the shoes in good shape. If you're only concerned with keeping the vamp and toe box nicely shaped, then I suppose you'd probably be good with those. Just my $0.02.

That would increase the competition  .  .  .

Has anyone seen the Alden SF Shell PTB make-up?  Has a single flex sole, storm welt, and looks a lot more sleek than the traditional PTB.  It also has an additional piece of leather (seam) on the upper running down the inside of the shoe  Compare it to the traditional PTB to see what I mean.  While we're at it, how does everyone compare this vs. traditional PTB vs. BB PTB (no storm welt and eyelet covers)?

This one is unlined, right? I have the LS version and I completely agree that it is sleeker than the stock PTB. I think the single flex sole goes a long way to changing the profile. I've found them to be extremely comfortable. The unlined shell has creased less dramatically on mine as well, though that may have to do with the sizing.

Is the photo your pair from Alden SF?

I have all three. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif They all have their high points. FWIW, I would suggest the following "rankings":

dressiest/formal:
BB
factory
LS

comfort (out of the box):
LS
BB/factory

most sleek:
BB
LS
factory

most creasing:
LS
BB/factory

Personal taste, of course, plays a role in all such "rankings."

Can't go wrong with any of the 3 ......

Absolutely beautiful!

Can't decide between the Cigar and Ravello for my next LWB. Any recommendations?

There are just way way too many shoes for anybody to keep track of.
But Aldens, in good condition? They'd have to be mis-listed.
