That would be my only concern too. I've seen some that look terrible.

I'd kill someone if i sent in an aged whiskey shell and this is what i got back; some half-assed #4 hybrid!

I'd demand they send me a brand new pair after that. WTF?

(Not that they don't look gorgeous on their own, but c'mon...)

Wow, those whiskeys look nice but completely different. It's like they lost all of their character and turned into #4. Sad.

I have had restorations/recrafts with Alden, BNelson, and AE. Given your post, I will restrict my comments to Alden and BNelson.

Some comparative facts, based on my experience:

BN - 90 for standard package (no trees); 125 for JR package (no trees); will take 2-3 weeks to get them back; Nick will talk to you directly if you have questions/suggestions
Alden - 159 for restoration (includes trees; without trees it is 149); will take 9 -12 weeks to get them back (my last one took 11 weeks); I don't know if the cobblers at Alden will talk to a person directly - I've never requested it

My last Alden recraft - a calf balmoral wingtip - came back in good shape. The upper had been reconditioned and the sole stitching was even. However, the color of the shoe was decidedly different (and I had not requested that) - medium brown (a color not even offered at present) to dark reddish brown. I wasn't thrilled about that. The color changed so much I had to alter my belt selection.

I have had shell and calf restored by BN, and the service has been wonderful. If you go with BN, get the JR package. It is well worth the 35 upcharge.

My next recraft - shell or calf - will be with BN.

Oh i agree. The restoration is awesome. However, they are no longer whiskey (not even close).

Thanks for this info!

What is the "JR" package as opposed to the standard?

Additional question: When Alden does deem something like this a defect, are they likely to apply a temporary fix, a permanent fix, or a replacement?

Thanks again!

had that exact thing on some lwb's I just sold (disclosed the unevenness in the listing) and i never even noticed it until i took a pic with flash one day. it didn't bother me, i always assumed it would even out with wear, or alden could re-dye it down the road.

I would request a new pair. With my request I would include before and after pictures. I would like to think Alden would accommodate such a request.

Joh. Rendenbach. J.R. leather is tanned using the "oak bark" method. Standard package has a decent leather outsole, but not JR quality.

As usual, excuse the lousy camera-phone.

PTB's on a typical dreary PDX morning.

Love the eggplant colour these babies are starting to develop.

Wonderful 8's; but perhaps I'm biased - I have the same pair. biggrin.gif

Just thought I would provide a PSA. AoC Has some pretty good offerings on the irregulars list. As has been mentioned, Adam has high standards for the shoes he sells and many of his irregulars would be sold as first quality shoes at other retailers.

Here is the list:

AF21, whiskey shell cordovan long wing tip, Barrie last. 11 D ($595)

AF108, black calfskin Indy boot, commando sole, Trubalance last. 10 D ($425)

AF43, black shell cordovan plain toe boot, commando sole, Trubalance last. 8 D ($575)

AF81, cigar shell cordovan long wing tip, Barrie last. 6 1/2 D ($475)

AF81, cigar shell cordovan long wing tip, Barrie last. 6 1/2 D, 9 D ($575)

AF70, ravello shell cordovan wing tip, crepe sole, Barrie last. 7 D ($525)

My only black pants are suit pants and wool trousers (gabardine, etc.). Personally, I can't bring myself to wear anything but black shoes with black pants - and this is one of the reasons I rather like black shell cordovan shoes. But I do know that some do it and pull it off just fine. To each their own ....

I know many like the commando sole or vibram type soles but I am very partial to leather soles (it doesn't rain much here).  I'm wondering why AoC has most of his very desirable boots almost all in commando soles.  It's a shame for me but probably good for those that like commandos.

They are based in Seattle. Lots of rain.
