Any of the Alden boots would work. Don't get the rough leather if you want a dressier look. Look around and buy what you like - it may take a while depending on stock.

Most versatile would be a no.8 shell captoe boot. Next would be a wingtip boot.

Thank you Albiciades, jhcam8, and Engprof for your insights !

after some more browsing I'm absolutely stoked with colour and look of these alden ravello captoe (http://www.arichinnerlife.com/2010/1...-captoe-boot/), absolutely gorgeous. I think that captoe is number one in my list

Albiciades -
maybe it is me because my assortment now is only dress oxfords and suede chukkas which do not work for me with wool pants - but maybe it is just because of suede or colours - not the plain toe. Should look for some more dressy plain toe boots.

jhcam,
sorry but what is rough leather vs "dressier"? For instance shell cordovan is on rough side or ?

I'm wondering why I can't pair my dress pants with suede chukka - they look very rough but at the same time I've seen a lot of shots of suit pairing with such boots. Maybe some more thick wool / flannels should work...

Sorry to peeve anyone if this has been asked a billion times, tried searching with limited success...

What's a good rule of thumb when sizing the Indy boot when it comes to toe room (length-wise)? I'm pretty comfortable all the way through the boot except I'm wondering if I have too much room in the length. Standing up, when I pinch my biggest toe it lines-up exactly with the outside threading (the outside rim of threading on the toe). This leaves about 1/2-3/4" of room between the end of my longest toe and the front of the boot.

Thanks!
