IMO the "flaw" is that they are not shell cordovan, but that's just me...

I'm damn close to pulling the trigger on these tan calf wingtips from J gilbert: Thoughts?

It doesn't bother me, I've never looked at second before and was wondering if it was an example one, if so I need to start looking at them. Only reason I was going to take them back is the only other pair of shell I have is same boot in ravello, thought I needed to diversify a little.

What size did you order? They only had one pair in my size which I just grabbed. Sean told me they'll arrive in 2-3 weeks.

I've seen these in person and they are a great makeup.

Sometimes it's hit or miss. Recently my observation is Alden's dye has been much darker. This may be due to trying to ensure more uniform finishes. However, maybe there are always variability.

Regarding variability, I totally understand and that was the reason I held back on the #4. I have a pre-order Day Tripper and another boot may be too close. A shoe maybe a different story though.

Maybe after a little wear there will be more contrast. Great first couple of purchases though, first Ravello and then a #4!

Alden uses a darker edge trim for their own version. Same goes for Ravello LWBs.

Is it time to buy some cream? I've just been brushing out the scratches on my shoe, which are many and counting (cordovan seems to scratch like a mofo). Is that the best way to treat a scratch like this? brush and some cream?

If these were mine I'd use a dab of renovateur and a deer bone....

Couple of places I know of:

http://store.asuitablewardrobe.net/search.aspx?find=deer+bone

and

http://horacebatten.com/products/deer_bone_for_wax_calf

I'm not totally convinced it's necessary myself.
