Would these look good with dress slacks or a suit?  (Rancourtts)

Can't decide if the handsewn portion is too casual

^ Definitely looks too casual for a suit IMO. These would probably work much better with a pair of chinos.

I went to Beams in Japan and saw aldens and was shocked by the sticker price. Pretty much everything was almost $900 or more. And you hear those (including me) in USA complain about 9% sales tax.

Nah I was talking about the release @ JCREW. Those ones look extra expensive for regular calf leather PTB because it was not an official import goods

I have the Rancourt beefroll penny loafer, which this is essentially a boot version of. Based on the shape and the construction, I'd say these are definitely more casual on the whole. That being said, they are really very nice looking boots and Rancourt was a pleasure to deal with. Maybe you should pick them up anyway...

Thanks for the feedback - we are business casual here - so while not a suit shoe.  I think i can probably get away with them on the day to day basis with slacks or chinos.  I'm going to see if Rancourt will do a color variant for me - as i think black will dress it up a bit and bring less exposure to the general casual construction.  (They say they are made to order - so hopefully a one off for me can happen - will keep you informed)

They can make them in cxl as well. I had emailed them earlier and heard back from Kurt Rancourt. Thinking about getting their cxl belt...

Last time I was in the San Francisco Alden shop they guy there, I think Kevin, said that the majority of their business is from either tourists visiting from Japan or Europe, or mail-order to those places. He said Aldens are literally double the cost over there so people visiting San Francisco come in to buy multiple pairs to bring back.

I think they'll be perfect for business casual. And I believe they should be very accommodating in making a pair up for you. I'd definitely ask for exactly what you want and then they'll let you know whether they can make the boot or not. I'll mention that I feel as if these size a little on the small side. I have two different pairs of Rancourts in 11, which should generally be my size, and it feels a little short to me. Historically, they've been able to send out a sample shoe for sizing, so maybe you can make use of that if you are uncertain. Overall, I think you are going to be very pleased. These are really nice shoes.

has everything you need except for the commando sole, but you could always have a reputable cobbler change that out for you:

I went to their flagship store in Charleston yesterday, and the people were less than clueless about Aldens. I was asking about what different lasts they had in stock, and the first girl looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language, she had no idea what a last even was. She referred me to someone else who was supposed to be an expert....he told me that most of their shoes in stock were on the Goodyear last facepalm.gif

True, is this boot any different than this one (except no speed laces)? Thank you!

Hi, FYI one U.S. size is 1/3 of an inch. That should help with deciding how far to size down. But, from what I have read on these threads, the length is not so important as getting the widest part of your foot to correspond to the widest part of the shoe. Hope this helps.

Beatle, surprised (not surprised your shoes are still available. Been hard to move items on B&S. Those would sell on eBay no problem
