Have you tried Alden in DC. In December I bought a Cap Toe Boot from them on the Grant Last with a comando sole, in Cigar. Perhaps they also carry #8 in the same boot.

Silly question, but when do you guys replace your Aldens with leather soles? Do you wait until holes start forming?

you can also buy a non-commando pair of boots, and then have your cobbler add a vibram sole. i just picked up a pair of brown longwings from the cobbler, only set me back $40 to have the vibram sole put on.

would like to share my favorite whiskey PTB I wore yesterday. After a few wears, I notice a darker shade of line going across the toe on my right pair. It doesn't bother me much but is there a way to make the color more even? I try to think that it's unique for my shoes.

Yah I wouldn't worry about it. It's just the gathering of pigments and oils. I had this happen to my cigar LWBs. Rather than rack your brain on trying to get rid of the color variation, appreciate the cordovan for what it is, a natural product. The only corodvan color (well shade) that doesn't do this is black.

To elaborate on what was already said, I think AE was doing pre-orders for like 10% or 15% off. It was a bit odd.

Alden on Madison.

Without going into detail I can say that Alden on Madison's customer service leaves much to be desired. While I am upset with myself for spending my money with them at all (I'm terribly impatient and couldn't find a whiskey PTB elsewhere), I will not give them any of my business in the future. Emails are not replied to in a prompt time frame, a completely different style of what I would consider to be second quality shoes were sent, billing was wrong (not in my favor), and on two occasions shoes were said to be shipped the same day that weren't shipped until the end of the next day (I would have assumed they would have offered expedited shipping to make up for the mistake as opposed to taking 24 hours to ship).

These little details are to be expected from large outfits, but in my opinion, there is no excuse from a small, high-end specialty retailer.

Haven't had any of my Alden's replaced (due to the thickness of the soles) but typically when I notice a small circular wear around the ball of the foot area. Ideally you would not want to "break the seal" to the next layer (i.e., significant wear to the mid layer might lead to additional repair).

This is just my practice and I am not a cobbler. Check out B. Nelson's website (Nick V. is the person to speak with) because it is informative.
