Thanks for the tip - just ordered a pair. I have been coveting AWW's for a while, but not badly enough to pay full price. smile.gif

Does anyone know where I can get a #8 PTB w/commando (or crepe) sole? Would love to add to my PTB collection but leather soles just don't work for me.

I missed out on the Ravello PTB w commando sole from Leffot - close to a perfect shoe. Funny, when I read your question about the #8 PTB with a commando or crepe sole I thought there have got to be lots of places that carry that but the only one I saw in my brief survey that was even close was the J Gilbert version with the waterloc sole. Note to retailers - that sounds like an easy special make-up.

Yeah I remember an AoC one on commando. Couldn't find pics but apparently it was the af22.
I swear I've seen one on crepe too.

LOL. Oh that's cold man but I won't disagree. Perhaps a more apt comparison is vanilla, chocolate and "extra-terrestrial rainbow sorbet with cryogenically frozen strawberries" biggrin.gif

I can't say I've ever seen a #8 PTB with commando or crepe soles.  Unionmade did a cigar version with a crepe sole, and it was handsome as all get out.

Well, guilty as charged again...I picked up the Unionmade PTB in Cigar as well. I knew my size wouldn't last long and finding pairs with non-leather soles is tough, so I pulled the trigger.

Got the Ravello's on now as I head out to the movies, so took a quick phone pic for you. They need a little Mac method love though.

I thought someone would have it as well but no luck when I searched. That J. Gilbert is my size though. A waterloc sole would not absorb as much water as a regular leather sole right? But are they still as slippery in the rain?

Let's us know how you like 'em! I ordered them from Orvis but my size will not be in until August.

Tech Tip #1 - my second Alden year.

I wanted to narrow the gap. The barrie-lasted Alden's fit well, some of them very well, but I wanted more. I wanted the perfect fit. I am a 9.5e on the Barrie last and a 10 in regular shoes. Wide foot, avg arch, thin and athletic ankles. The LWBs fit very well, the chukka's I wanted more. I wanted to fly above the clouds.

I had heard the advice about sizing down even more than 1/2 inch. My shoe muse at Alden whispered sweetly "try the 9ee - you will lose a bit of toe room, but the fit will be nice and tight". It was late, I had a bit too much to drink. And then. I did it. I order a 9eee from Shoemart. I waited patiently while they shipped from Connecticut, all the while, piecing together my wings of feather and wax in preparation.

When they arrived I grabbed the box and stuffed it into the closet before the family ever saw them, waited till the wife and kids were in bed (did I mention I used a secret non-joint account paypal card to mask the purchase?) and sliced open - very carefully - the shoemart shipping box. The first moment was exhilarating. The smell of the new cordovan and the sheen of the #8 burgundy made me dizzy with anticipation. I was soaring above the clouds and into the sweet blue sky. I was going to have the PERFECT BARRIE FIT GODDAMIT, CREDIT CARD BILLS AND HOUSE PAYMENT BE DAMNED.

I slipped my left foot into my 6 months old LWB and the right into the new shoe and immediately knew the battle had been in vain. Like Icarus, my feather wings were falling apart and my hopes plummeted further to the ground with every passing second of viewing the new shoe. Wait a minute, these are as wide as hell. Holy crap, they look like clown shoes. And they are as long as my 9.5e's! And the heel looks like it would fit an elephant foot. GOOD LORD HELP ME. They make my wide shoes look like anorexic models. Oh the humanity. Tears flowed.

I cursed my failed ambition and hubris, humbly packed the shoes back in the box and performed an online RMA to Shoemart. My Alden experiment has failed. I am sticking with my 9.5e's. I hope my story and pictures below are useful to all of you seeking to fly too close to the sun with Alden.

I didn't notice darkening in my 403s at all:

But they are pretty dark brown to begin with when they are new so I think YMMV.

Thank you for posting that brother! We will all benefit from your experience.I'm sure it was well worth the $7.95 return shipping fee. I would say that it is!

New forum member and new Alden fan here.  Here's my story.  So this holiday season I resolved to retool my wardrobe.  I'm a 40 year old humanities academic who never really stopped dressing like an impoverished grad student.  I have some nice things, but they're all performance gear related to hiking.  For instance, smartwool baselayers, Limmer hiking boots, Arc Teryx goretex jacket/pants.  But I don't have any nice office clothes, and nowhere is this more obvious than with shoes.  In the last 15 years, for instance, I can count up purchasing and discarding 17 pair of ill-fitting, ugly, cheap "dress shoes".  This includes many, many pair of Camper shoes that I got on sale and which all fell apart after a year or so.

So in my wardrobe makeover everyone says start, or at least concentrate, on shoes.  I learn that if I spend $300 instead of $100, I get get sewn on soles that promise multiple resoles and many years of use.  I knew this in terms of hiking boots, but for some reason never made the connection to office wear.  So I go to Allen Edmonds in Boston and check out my first nice shoes.  Allen Edmonds, from the friendly and super helpful staff in their store to their all around famed customer service, is a company and brand I immediately like.  But many of the shoes I see in their store look like factory seconds.  There are scuff marks on the leather in many models I see, and weird creasing, coloration in other models.  Yes, I'm being more picky than usual, but for $300 I'm underwhelmed by their offerings.  (And I say this as someone who went into the store really, really wanting to like Allen Edmonds and who really liked the staff I worked with!)  Alas, I'd rather pay $500 for very good quality control than $300 for shoes that have obvious blemishes.

So I go to Shoemart which isn't too far from where I live and check out Aldens.  I don't love the price point and reading about the company their customer service is not so well regarded as Allen Edmonds (see young clay b's story on Ask Andy).  But I reluctantly try on several pair and boom, done . . . I'm hooked.  I buy a pair of color 8 PTB and after a week of wear I love them.  I find the white creasing to be beguiling on the color 8 and I want more.  Plus, I need a full rotation so I dont prematurely wear my shoes out.  So the next week I pick up a pair of color 8 cordovan chukkas and a pair of suede chukkas (which I think are gorgeous in the snuff color).  But I want more cordovan, and the next day I pick up a pair of cigar chukkas.  At this point, my wife is about to kill me, though what she doesn't know is that I've already placed orders for cigar longwings and a pair of whiskey ptb.  So at the moment I have a pair of color 8 ptb, a pair of cigar and color 8 chukkas, and a pair of suede chukkas.  That's four pair in a month with two more on order.  Glad to have the obsession.  And no, none of you here have helped me control the symptoms.  God help us all.  P.S.  I wear an 8.5 D in the cordovans on the Barrie last, and I bought a 9D in the suede chukkas on the leydon last.  I think I need a 9E on the suede chukkas, if anyone is interested in a trade.  I've worn them only once, but I know they're tight.

AoC does a Ravello lwb on crepe and a #8 chukka on commando. That's likely neither here nor there though.
