Wait, so you have at least three pairs of Indys as well?? happy.gif In that case, I wonder if the plain toes would get much use. Then again, they could be for those days when you don't want to beat up your Indys.

Yes, I am somewhat of a fan of the Indys...haha. I am just a huge fan of the trubalance last generally. Such a good fit for me.

Def gonna throw those boots on B&S and see if there are any takers!

I'd say the last fit pic shows the true color.

LOL, these boots look significantly better than they do even on display in stores. J Crew has (I believe) had this plain toe boot in their mens stores for a while, but the boots on display always appear to be worn, scuffed, etc and didn't look all that appealing. Honestly I am going to take a look at a version out of the box this weekend on the strength of these pics.

Not really surprising considering the pair they have on their website are full of scratches/scuffs already.

Yeah, but sometimes boots come from Alden that way. Anyone who thinks Alden's quality control is fantastic is, in my opinion, very much misguided.

Still don't get why pick a pair of shoe that is less than perfect to show off in pics?

And yeah, Alden certainly isn't the best when it comes to quality control, all my Aldens had these written lines where the stitches are suppose to go or as a guide how things line up, they should have at least polished these pencil marks out before sending them out. I have these marks on the stitching on the toes of both my Indy's as well.

So even though perhaps the construction isn't quite as up to par, the 1000 miles are a fantastic choice for a "budget" CXL boot, which, I would argue, beats out a non-CXL Alden boot like the J Crew plain toes. (EDIT: I have also seen the J Crew plain toes in person as well.)

I think the idea that the 1000 miles are rugged and for foul weather is misguided. They're rugged and foul in a sort of urban sense. I do not own them, but if I did I'd wear them like I would Indys. And honestly whatever last Wolverine is using looks way better than the Trubalance.

That being said, I love my 403s and am glad I chose them over the 1000 miles. I just feel as though unless you're getting CXL or shell on a pair of Aldens, the quality of Alden's regular non-CXL calf is middling enough that it seems worth being open-minded and considering other options.

My compromise has been a pair of 403s that I wear very often, and then a pair of Chippewas for snow/torrential rain/mud/etc.

And then, obviously, ravello boots, etc, for whenever.

So you're saying that a pair of boots (in this case the 1000 Miles), which you don't even own, is of superior quality?

That's almost certainly courtesy of J.Crew. They "distress" all the Alden's they show on the site. Look at the suede LWB's for example.

your pic of the plain toes are nicer than the jcrew site. i never even considered them when looking on their site.

but i still want a pair of indy's first! just gotta figure out my size!

Maybe so, but some of the boots I've received direct from Alden have come to me looking like this. Not seconds, not irregulars, nothing - just "new" shoes, with some minor scuffing already present on the uppers. I used to make a big deal out of it, but now I choose to buy other manufacturers for dressier shoes and buy Alden for more rugged-inspired shoes, so the scuffs are less of an aesthetic concern.

Finally got my J Crew perforated captoes today.
These plus the black wing tips and Polo Lindricks I got last month are by far the greasiest feeling and fragrent of polish new shoes I've ever experienced.

I'm in love with mine. Glad I sent back the black wing tip boot and went with these. My only complaint is that they came in a generic cardboard box with no Alden shoe bags. They will fix that though!263263
