other option is to just beat down your leather soles and when ready for a resole, put on commando or dainite

The reason I asked is because my new job will require me to wear suits daily. As of now, I have to wear company approved slip resistant shoes so on my days off, if it's raining hard, I can wear my work boots and such. I may use this as another excuse to buy some more shoes. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

A good cobbler can put a low-profile rubber sole cover on your shoes that will provide traction and can be removed at the end of the winter. Some of them are on the thick side, but I have one on a pair non-Alden chukkas that provides stability without impacting the overall look of the shoe.

If you do elect to go for a rubber sole on your goodyear welted soles, specifically request a Topy Elysee in the thinnest width available. Here, in Australia, the thinnest they offer is 1.8mm, but I believe over in the US you can get 1mm which is the thinnest Topy manufacture. Coupled with a bevelled edge to the rubber, it's virtually undetectable from side on and provides good protection against the elements in the city.

For something to take outside of the city, naturally opt for something thicker. But, on dress shoes/boots, insist on Topy Elysee. I'll post some pics of my Alden for J Crew boots that have a 1.8mm rubber.

Also, I've just dropped the price on my Alden for Leather Soul Cordovan Short Wing shoes. They're no 495 AUD shipped worldwide. Worn only once.

Those look great although they appear a little lighter than I like my whiskey. I prefer a redder whiskey over the yellow. Perhaps it's just the photo? In any case, Love me some whiskey

Blame the blackberry. Theyre redder/darker than they appear in the photo.

Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I think I will suck it up and get a couple of pairs with commando and/or danite sole. smile.gif Now another reason to buy more shoes. Admittedly, I wear my cheap dress shoes in harsh condition more than often. Before I had the means to buy Aldens, I wore Kenneth Cole, Banana Republic, etc. These are good enough for the rain. But I guess I'm using the new job as a reason to buy more stuff.

Riddle me this, wj4, a job that requires you to wear suits AND rubber soled shoes? That be mighty queer to me.
wj4, pick up some much ridiculed Allen Edmonds seconds on the cheap to wear on really nasty days. I've been pretty happy doing that instead of trashing the few pairs of Edward Greens I own. Since they don't cost that much (relatively speaking), I don't feel bad beating them to hell over the course of the winter. Also, remember Dainite soles are SLIPPERY.
