Yeah, $795 is steep, but at the pre-sale in store price (or if someone will give up a on-line code), I think they are 40% +15% off, so around 50% off. Someone said out the door for $404. For that price they are definitely worth it. It is a very nice color, and they still look great as they are breaking in.Most of these shoes come with a double sole. If you want you can have them topey'd, but I say just wear them. When you wear out the sole (and it will take you years), just send them back to Alden and they come back as good as new. Double leather soles are pretty bomb-proof, they don't really need much care. They will wear a bit faster if they get wet a lot, but that's about it. Commando will wear out eventually too, and while I don't have specific evidence, I bet a commando sole needs to be replaced before you wear out a double leather sole.
Thanks, I was wondering whether the hype surrounding the C&J shell darltons was a little overblown... I own a pair of black shell Aldens and love em, so for the price compared to benchmade C&Js, I should probably stick to Alden
thanks. the commando sole definitely looks a bit clunky, and that worries me. at the same time I'm not sure I'm disciplined/careful enough to care for leather soles in the Boston weather, and I'd rather be more "comfortable" if I step in a puddle or something. does Alden have a sole that wears easy in bad weather but isn't as full on clunky as the commando?
