I've had my fair share of Barrie boots and owned the J Crew boot in 2011 and tried it again last year. This boot most definitely fits tighter for me across the vamp, to the point of being very uncomfortable.

And I've owned several AE shoes on the same last in the same style and they can often feel markedly different. Variations within runs and within lasts happen. You can't possibly believe that they use a different last or a special "smaller" Barrie for J.Crew.

I reached out to Alden directly. Let's see what they have to say about it.

You didn't ask if they have a Barrie Jr. last did you???

Wow, yes I was joking. It wouldn't make sense for Alden to keep a smaller set of Barrie Lasrs to confuse folks. It's possible that they are made around one of the more abstract BB lasts as well. I don't have a pair so I can't help much. I have the Leffot a Naval which is made around the Barrie and is 360... The 360 vs 270 shouldn't make a noticeable sizing difference.

I asked Alden if there is any truth to the rumor that the J.Crew #8 PCT boot is smaller or more tightly lasted than other Barrie last boots, and whether there is any possible explanation for why some folks seem to believe that they are noticeably tighter than other Barrie last boots.

Makes sense. :-) Good questions.

Anyone talk to Leffot recently to get an update on the reverse chamois tobacco wingtip boot? It's been 5 months since the pre-order. Hope those come in before the weather goes downhill here in NY.

Similar experience here. I own the J Crew PCT boot along with maybe 5-6 other barrie lasted boots. The JCrew version definitely fits a bit tighter for me. Not enough for where I need to go TTS but I do notice the difference.

I can take measurements (interior and exterior) of my J.Crew PCT boot this weekend, along with measurements of my other Barrie boots and report back. I'd like to hear from other folks here who have the J.Crew PCT along with other pairs of boots on the Barrie last.
I can't argue with the opinions of others on how things fit for them but I agree in that I find the fit totally the same as my other 3 Barrie boots. No difference at all. But I almost hate to respond as it contributes to the endless endless endless rehashing of this subject over and over again.

I'm not in on this run in particular, but Leffot does not get updates on orders from Alden. They show up when the show up. I have gotten this answer a couple times.

I'll share my experience with this boot. I have several 10.5D Barrie lasted shoes, including the 975, which fit me very well. When the JCrew coupon code worked on Aldens a few weeks ago I grabbed an 11D (no 10.5s available) to try. I am well aware of the history in this thread with this particular boot, so I didn't have qualms about going up 1/2 a size, knowing I could easily return.

I tried on my 975s with them, a 975 on my left foot and the PCT boot on the right, and vice versa. For MY feet, the PCTs are tweeners. They are not as perfectly fitting as a 10.5D but they are only slightly bigger. They are perfect examples, flawless color and construction to my eye, so I plan on keeping. I would love to try a 10.5D, yes, but given that I got it on 'sale' and that size is not in stock, I have to either keep or let it go and hope I can scoop it up again down the road.

I am 99% sure I'll be keeping. Absolutely gorgeous boot. They DO have some squeak to them, I've seen other people mention that early on with certain cordovan models. I am hoping that is NOT because they are indeed too big...

OK - now I'm officially confused whether we're joking or not.  Is there really a modified Barrie last?  (I know there's a Modified last, but...)

FWIW, the fit of my Barrie WT boots from AoM and my Barrie LWB's from JCrew feels similar, though I wouldn't say my feel for this is very refined...

No. I have the J.Crew PCT boot in 8D, and I have two other boots on the Barrie last (AoM Cigar captoe, DC Color 8 Wingtip), and I do not notice a difference at all in the fit. I think this is one of those rumors that got started, and now people are conditioned to think the J.Crew PCT is "tighter" or something like that.

Of course, there are variations within a given last - I can tell you that some of my Barrie last bluchers feel a little different from others - whether it's the pattern, the last itself, the lasting process - I don't know. These are shoes, not chemicals. You can't measure them down to the molecular level, and you can't even measure the volume easily, but I for one have never noticed a difference between the J.Crew PCT and any other Barrie lasted boot.

I have the JCrew and regular Barrie and the JCrew is tighter on me. So much so that I nearly sold it to go up to a size 13...lost some weight and now it fits. I think for some people there is no difference while for many others there is. And I agree there probably is difference in lasts they probably make more boots for JCrew in a single model than anyone else and it would not be crazy to think the lasts get worn down some....of course I really have no idea.

Curious @JSO1 how do you size barrie last to your brannock size?

Generally, I just go 1/2 size down from Brannock (8.5D) to Barrie (8D).

However, I do find that Barrie has a very wide heel, which causes heel slip in shoes (not so much in boots, obviously). All of my Barrie shoes/boots are 8D except my 975, which is 8C. I have tried 8C in the 975 and found that to be a better fit on my heel. It's snugger across the toes and vamp, obviously, but once it gets broken in the 8C works also.

In an ideal world, I would need the combination last to be A/D instead of A/C or B/D (the standard combinations).

Other Alden lasts - Aberdeen (8.5D), Plaza (8.5D), Hampton (8.5D), 379X (8D), Grant (8.5D).
