I almost bought and am still almost buying those dark brown Plaza Indys, @budapest12

I know some people put tape (duct tape / gorilla tape etc.) on the inside of the hem opening so that the indigo doesn't transfer across to the suede. Not tried it myself, I just don't wear bleeding indigo with suede.

You didn't buy the last 9 by any chance? If so, thank you.

Nope, 8.5D.

I have a quick question for you all. I'm in the market for a new boot to wear this winter, and I'm thinking about picking up something nicer this year (read: Alden) versus the crummy beaters I've used in past seasons. The issue I keep coming back to is that I'd want to wear them almost daily in the snow (and salt) of downtown Chicago. I know that some/many of you wear yours in the elements; does anyone have advice for care/pre-treatment? I'm obviously thinking commando sole, maybe an Indy, but recommendations to that end are welcome as well. Thanks in advance.

^ Go for the Epaulet Innsbruck Indy if they have your size. Will handle abuse well. I would still recommend trying not to wear everyday - alternate with your beaters until you eventually get a second pair you can rotate. Clean them with water and a little vinegar when they get salt on them.

I was honestly thinking about that exact makeup. Thanks for the advice. Should I use some kind of weatherproofer over the cxl? I don't usually do that on my leather shoes/boots but I'm wondering if it'll make any difference on something I plan on getting wet frequently.

He most likely got the Ultimate Indys. Since 10D was the largest Vintage Indy they got, I asked frown.gif

Nah....I want them for work. The only reason I'd like CXL is that I'd know exactly what to expect from the leather. I've never had Alden calf and I'm worried I've been spoiled by EG.

Ever notice how when you buy a belt, they tell you to buy the belt 2 sizes longer than your pant size? That's partially because of vanity sizing. When you go to the store and try on size 30 pants, they're not actually 30 inches at the waist. They're larger, often by at least a few inches. And over time, clothing has gotten even larger for a given size. So if you have a 32-33" waist, you might wear size 30 in most jeans. Some makers, like Gustin, don't do the vanity sizing thing, so their jeans are smaller in a particular size than the jeans of another maker in that same size.

"Vanity sizing" = a smaller size than your actual measurement. e.g. size 34 jeans have a larger waist.
True to size = the size you actually are. e.g. if 36" waist buy size 36 jeans.

Thanks gents...I am starting to like my comfort waist pants more and more....the vanity is built right in :)

While I concur with suggested boot, to mix up your rotation for winter get an Alden then pick up an Allen Edmonds Long Branch(second) one of the finest winter boots I own. I have the original Waxy Brown however the Golden CXL currently offered is beautiful and as a second or on sale it is under $300 and a great way to extend the life of your Alden. Here is a picture of mine.

Thanks! I may just do that. It looks like there are several pairs in my size on Shoebank, so I might be making a few phone calls this week... I appreciate the thoughtful advice.
