damn. 3 full year and unworn.

if people are wondering why it's so much harder to get some of these makeups, I'd say the "collectors" mentality is a pretty big factor here. people buy and hold (or, hoard) b/c they know they can recoup costs on secondary market if they change their minds. if it's a rare shell color they will appreciate even.

this is a prime example - someone buys from LS, wait 2 years, then sells them, and now they are still unworn!

It's hard to get them because relatively few of the rare shell make ups are produced on an annual basis. Whether buyers hoard them or not has little to do with it.

Also, often, people will wait for a shoe they have committed to as a pre-order, and when it arrives 12-24 months after the initial pre-order, they may take delivery then change their mind, or just take the same amount of time to consider keeping them, knowing that unloading rashly may lead to serious regrets.

I was wondering the same thing. I placed an order with LS back in 2012 and am still waiting for that delivery to come in. I would have been upset if those boots were from that order and I had somehow missed them!

PSA/not my auction:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alden-for-Leathersoul-12D-Black-Shell-Cordovan-Monk-Strap-Plaza-Last-/262006441059?hash=item3d00cd0463

NIB Alden single monk in black shell cordovan for a great price - size 12D on the Plaza last

Seems like something the larger-footed, business dress folks would go pretty crazy for...

^^^

wouldnt be surprised if those are the pair I sold, or were picked up from LS when I got mine under their Last Pair column. they've been on ebay for a bit now

Boots - Same as above, especially if you are open to different deisgns: sw, indy, cap toe, etc

Edited to add- D width in 9-11 gives you the best chance. What size are you?

Thank you, I will try to keep up! This thread moves fast smile.gif

I'm a 9D Barrie/TruBalance, 9.5D Barrie Boot. Not sure about other lasts, I've only tried Aberdeen 9.5D and it hurts.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that buying/holding (or hoarding as it were) is the primary factor influencing availability of shell in rare colors. I think it's more a function of supply (less people eating horse meat) and demand (high demand for shell cordovan...and possibly marketing to some extent). The other major factor is that Alden chooses to focus on Color 8 & Black shell rather than the rarer colors. It's their business practice and it's kept them in business for 100+ years. It's frustrating but I can respect their decision. "Rare" colored shell is actually available if you choose to go with another maker. A simple example is Crockett & Jones. They have dark brown cordovan (what Alden calls Cigar) available right now in the Skye II boot. I can call them tomorrow and get a pair.

Just to provide some added context, I've only really been interested in Alden for about 2 years. All of my unworn Alden shoes/boots are less than 12 months old. I got on lists, made calls, made friends on the forums, searched eBay, the buy & sell forum, and instagram. So I was persistent, lucky, and knew which shoes I wanted. That's it. Is it comforting to know that in the event I want to sell any of these shoes eventually that I can get my money back? Sure. But that's just a bonus. I'm planning to wear them all but I'm already working through a rotation. If I had more feet, I'd wear more shoes! biggrin.gif

Nah. I picked these up on Instagram from the Leatherhealer. Pure luck. That's it.

Hello guys. I have a question. I was performing the Mac method on my shoes when I noticed some type of coating peeling off the toe of my boot. Can someone please tell me what it is? I am going to take it over to TSM today but I wanted to ask you guys first. I'm attaching a horrible quality picture

That is more than likely the acrylic finish that Alden applies to all their shell cordovan. How old are these?

They are brand new from the shoemart. I've worn them on 3 occasions for a few hours each time.
