Personally I prefer the less shined up version - Shiny Shell still has that vynal or patent leather look to me... I appreciate it for sure and if I wore suits or dressy business then I would be shining away. My J Crew the toe cap is shinier just because it has not worn off yet. My cigar indies are nice and broken in - just wipe down and brush.
For me, the novelty may wear off along with the shine, but after years of relentless wiping and brushing in the pursuit of glossing up my shell to a proper glow, it's great to pull a new pair of boots out of the box and think "These are ridiculous. I don't have to touch these. I don't have to do anything to these."
Chalk it up to the impressions of a noob on his Alden honeymoon, if you will.
Yes that shine is alluring...for sure I do not strip that shine away...LOL...I am not a barbarian!.
