Then I tried them on:

I'm really excited - these things are great!

Still working out care (neatsfoot vs. venetian), but really happy to own these...  :)

In my experience, venetian shoe cream would darken natural cxl.

Brand new unworn natural cxl LWB

About 1x times wear and apply venetian shoe cream twice.

Good to know. Does Venetian show cream darken brown CXL? What do you recommend that won't darken CXL?

I think these will look great with casual wear and also dressed up in a suit. What do you think?

Wow, very nice foray into alden/shell. I love the wingtip with the flat welt. Is that a plaza makeup?

Ttown - for my money there is no better winter weather boot than Alden shell on commando. However I can imagine how the Ohio winters can get and I would definitely recommend a little defender from time to time.

I am far from an expert but Pittsburgh winters can get pretty nasty as well and for my money there is no better material for bad weather than shell. Now I'm not shoveling the driveway in them, but I've got a decent hike to the bus stop so I've got some experience in wearing shell in the elements. Wipe them down at the end of the day and they hold up fine. I will admit that I baby my ravello boots so I'm a little more careful with those but color 8, I pound them and they take it just fine.

Also if you do plan to use them as a winter workhorse consider boot socks when sizing. All three of my Alden preorder are one half size larger than my normal size as they will all be for winter wear. Nothing worse than a kick ass winter boot that you freeze in cause you can only wear dress socks with.

I thought these over for many years. I put them in the back of my mind but kept coming back to them. Finally Pulled the trigger this summer. My only regret is not getting them sooner.

The snuff is extremely comfy, especially when paired with the commando. I'd highly recommend them.

alpine grain all weather walker. wore the same pair in HEAVY rain this summer. wipe them down, they look like new.

Love the look with the selvedge. Nice DV!

As we often say here, some of the best models are the stock models which often get overlooked.

I will not be showing these to the wife. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Leffot cigar Indys on left, TSM cigar Indys on right.

Sir:

You are not only rational, but very wise. I like the way you think.
Not all people can appreciate this gift.

I hope you enjoy your new boots.

I have yet a chance to use VSC on the brown cxl.  You can try Saphir Renovateur.

Wow - thanks for posting those photos!  I definitely don't want to hasten any darkening (though the shoes look terrific in that second shot!).   So...neatsfoot?  Would be interesting to see similar photos with that stuff.  I'm assuming there's a CXL Care and feeding thread here somewhere - hoping it will be definitive vs. a lot of potentially conflicting opinions... smile.gif

I think I did buy Alden's cream - I was excited to wear the shoes right away, and they offered to ship my other shoes back so I think I asked them to toss a jar in the box.

I also recently picked up some AE's in natural waxed leather - I'll go find the AE section for some thoughts there beyond saddle soap smile.gif

I havent noticed any darkening of brown CXL from VSC. I could definitely see natural CXL darkening from just about any treatment (never used aliens boot cream) besides a barely damp cloth and brush.
