They offered to return the money since it's pretty clear that boot isn't getting made.

If it does get made, those who committed to buy would have the chance to do so.

Are you talking about the AoM order? To be fair to that order, it was originally a Ravello WT boot order before there was a communications breakdown with the factory and the store.

Didn't see anything all that spectacular on the seconds email. A lot of the usual suspects.

For any big-footed dudes there is a really cool black shell chukka with antique welt and edge in size 13D on TSM irregular list. I can't recall ever seeing a boot like that before.

This.

I got my money back a while ago (actually, I think I just rolled it into another Epaulet purchase), but if it ever does come in, I have dibs on a pair in my size before they hit the general public.

Yes. Im not knocking AoM they handled professionally but still, it was pay in full last spring. Thats a long time for the delivery of some boots.

Alden captoes. Agree with Sazon that the outlook on shell cordovan offerings looks bleak. Wearing these feels especially good today. Yeeee

Speaking of.

Thanks for the quick delivery. They look great. I had some new AEs I was comparing to so I didn't get a separate shot. The welt is actually trimmed a little tighter on the AE but that's the only plus over the PCT.

Oh! That was you! Nice glad it worked out. The alden definitely stands out next to AE: te contours are far more elegant imo

Fascinating discussion on black shell and I want to thank everyone who contributed for helping me out. The posts are far too many to quote. Background, about 6-7 years ago my employer went to business casual, a decision I was very happy about. I was up to about 10 suits at that point and I was ready for change. I was also about 10 lbs heavier than I would have liked. Over the years that number inched up another 20 lbs and I finally got disgusted enough to get serious. Over the past year I lost 30 lbs, which put me at 10 lbs lighter than I was when I retired my suits. I also find an increasing need to wear suits, none of which fit the way I would like. As such, I have decided to have some altered and bring 5 back into my rotation. Given the nature of the alterations, each will cost around $50. My top 5 includes a charcoal grey suit, which lead to my question. I own 2 pair of black shells, Alden Fullstraps and AE Greyson, both of which are great for slacks and a blazer but neither works for a suit. While I think black shell looks great when I see them posted on this site, they don't come close to how I feel about color 8 or cigar. And I don't see myself investing serious coin on a pair so the question was whether I should pass on altering the grey suit or if I could make it work with something other than black.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I decided to include the grey suit in the first (and hopefully only) round of alterations partly based on the feedback from this discussion. As a hedge I also picked up a great looking vintage Burgendy pair of Bostonian shell shortwings on eBay earlier today. Soles, heels and uppers look great. I'll dye them black and they will serve the purpose for the grey suit if color 8 or cigar don't work for me.

Again, thanks to all for the input. The willingness to help found on this site never ceases to amaze me.

As an aside, the need for alterations is not all related to weight loss. I am amazed at how poorly my suits must have fit me 6-7 years ago. Either that or my weight loss has also resulted in me getting about 3 inches shorter. So in addition to having jackets and slacks taken in, I am also having slacks shortened.

Just to close the loop on this post, below is my solution. WARNING, post include spoilered pic's of non-Alden shoes. They are shell's so I thought there may be some interest.

My solution was to grab a pair of non-Alden shell's with good guts but maybe beat up leather and try to bring them back to life. Below is a timeline.....
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Shoes before work commenced with my 'tools'.....

Here's a shot after an application of Reno Mat - notice how the Reno removed a little paint from the shoes (this is good)

Here's a shot after the initial application of dye (2 coats).......

Let dry for an hour and apply another cost - total time to apply 3 coats, less than 5 minutes total. Let dry for another 3 hours and apply a heavy coat of Venetian shoe creme (the dye can dry the shoes out so I apply a really heavy coat). Let sit for 15 minutes and apply another application of Venetian creme. Brush as normal, wipe with a cloth, and this is what you end up with.....

They're certainly not Alden quality but for the minimal use I will get out of them, they will suffice. Maintenance is no different than any other shell, wipe and brush. For the first few cleanings, you will get a little product on the rag. This will dissipate after a few cleanings.

For context, here's a shot next to my black Fullstraps......

Again, thanks to all who offered advice. It was really appreciated.

I was browsing the Leffot site randomly today and managed to pick up the tan unlined suede LHS for half off! What a steal
