Fascinating discussion on black shell and I want to thank everyone who contributed for helping me out. The posts are far too many to quote. Background, about 6-7 years ago my employer went to business casual, a decision I was very happy about. I was up to about 10 suits at that point and I was ready for change. I was also about 10 lbs heavier than I would have liked. Over the years that number inched up another 20 lbs and I finally got disgusted enough to get serious. Over the past year I lost 30 lbs, which put me at 10 lbs lighter than I was when I retired my suits. I also find an increasing need to wear suits, none of which fit the way I would like. As such, I have decided to have some altered and bring 5 back into my rotation. Given the nature of the alterations, each will cost around $50. My top 5 includes a charcoal grey suit, which lead to my question. I own 2 pair of black shells, Alden Fullstraps and AE Greyson, both of which are great for slacks and a blazer but neither works for a suit. While I think black shell looks great when I see them posted on this site, they don't come close to how I feel about color 8 or cigar. And I don't see myself investing serious coin on a pair so the question was whether I should pass on altering the grey suit or if I could make it work with something other than black.

I decided to include the grey suit in the first (and hopefully only) round of alterations partly based on the feedback from this discussion. As a hedge I also picked up a great looking vintage Burgendy pair of Bostonian shell shortwings on eBay earlier today. Soles, heels and uppers look great. I'll dye them black and they will serve the purpose for the grey suit if color 8 or cigar don't work for me.

Again, thanks to all for the input. The willingness to help found on this site never ceases to amaze me.

As an aside, the need for alterations is not all related to weight loss. I am amazed at how poorly my suits must have fit me 6-7 years ago. Either that or my weight loss has also resulted in me getting about 3 inches shorter. So in addition to having jackets and slacks taken in, I am also having slacks shortened.

Someone else mentioned cigar and given that I recently got lucky on the shortwings fro AoM, I was happy to hear that. My only reservation was the antique edge. But if I recall, the TSM model was also on antique. Good news indeed MrDV. Thanks.

New Whiskey vs Older 4 years old Whiskey LHS's. I love the Orange tint in the older iteration.

Dark brown calf, dark brown suede, #8 are all my go to colors for pairing with gray.

My normal rotation is Chocolate Brown Suede PTB, Chocolate Brown Chukka, Dark Brown Perf Cap Toe, #8 LWB, #8 PTB

Also have a black calf Viberg boot and I'm on the epaulet black shell boot pre-order. And again, I would potentially add more here but it's less of a priority considering how great the Viberg and Alden boots should be.

I've thought about that a lot because
1) I love color 8
2) As I said earlier, my only black shoes are AE 5th Avenues and I'm not a big fan(just got them for a good price)

New Jet Black 987's for your dinning and dancing pleasure.
I love the new wider welt Alden is using now...

Wow. I am also surprised to see all this Black Shoe distaste. But it is my general observation that this community typically dresses more buisiness casual to casual in their Aldens. Black Shell is a phenomenal color and material and is definitely under appreciated.

I own the Semi-Brogue Balmoral, Perf Tip Balmoral, BB Wingtip, Tassel (in prod), Full-Strap, LHS, NST Blucher, Grant Indy, Ryden Boot (in prod) and CT Boot (in prod) all in Black Shell Cordovan. They are all fantastic and I would recommend any of those models.

I love the Whiskey LHS. It is fun to see the different shades due to patina.
