Finding "exotic" Alden shell new is basically an exercise in futility. However, it is possible to get stupidly lucky. For the sake of it, here's my rare shell (new only) provenance:

- whiskey ptb, bought bnib from SF member on B&S
- cigar captoe boot, saw a PSA post here and called AoM immediately to order it and got lucky that they had my size
- cigar captoe blucher, talked to Kathy & Joe at Alden DC and they happened to have my size

All my other "exotic" shell was purchased used. I have deposits in on two preorders with Yenni at B&M (ravello LWB and cigar LWB) but those orders were submitted a while ago and not yet confirmed to my knowledge.

I'm also on a few wish lists with Kathy at Alden DC (no deposit required) and Ed Z. at TSM (no deposit required).

My advice - reach out to Alden DC and get on some lists for styles you like. Also get in touch with Alden of Madison and get on their exotic shell email list. Also follow every Alden dealer and retailer on Instagram and check it frequently.

Pretty good advice, the key is building relationships with vendors... Going to the physical stores goes a LONG ways... :-)

Let me preface this by saying that I've been an Alden fan for 10 years. In the past 2 years I have spent over $6K on Aldens of every sort. This week I ordered a pair of brown CXL Indy's and had to return them because of poor stitching and the back of the boot was too far off the heel.  I was able to exchange them and this is what arrived today:

I'm sorry but this is CRAP QC and completely unacceptable.  I hate to say it, but this is actually better than the prior pair.  I'm so disgusted, I feel like moving on from this brand.  They need to sort this out ASAP because if they are losing customers like me that spend literally thousands of dollars a year on their shoes, then something is wrong, very wrong.

Sorry to vent like this.  I'm usually the type of person that unless I have something nice to say, I usually don't say anything at all.  But I'm so disappointed to see this company heading into this territory.  These were $570!  I can buy a cheap pair of sketchers that are made in China with better stitching.

Sorry to hear about this, contact the vendor and request they replace them for you. I usually ask them to look them over before sending to me...

Thanks.  Sad that we now have to ask that they look them over before sending.  I remember a time when you never had to worry about what you were going to get from Alden.  Red Wings yes, AE, yes, but never Alden.  I miss those days.  This is a labor problem, not a materials problem.  I don't like anyone losing their jobs, but they need to fire some people over there.  If this was my business, I'd be horrified and making some changes asap!  I'm not going to replace them yet again, just going to return them and move on.

I don't know if firing is the right solution. Part of the problem is the lack of skilled labor. Hand sewns are taking ages and their factory is under immense pressure to crank out shoes. Wait times are noticeably longer now than a year or two ago IMO.

Hopefully you get it all sorted out. At least this isn't an extremely rare model. I'm always slightly terrified that I'll end up getting some flawed pair of exotic shell and I will have to either accept the flaws or wait another few years.

Gorgeous. The NST is growing on me, and I really love the Aberdeen last.

Those Cigar SWBs are fantastic. Gotta find a pair someday, although I think I'd want it in Ravello or Whiskey.

The Tan LWB looks pretty cool. Grain isn't my style but I think that shoe pulls it off.

Congrats on the new arrivals.

@mdubs  Country Calk LWB's looks great.  Perfect for San Diego.

SF definitely carries it as normal stock, and Kathy at DC ordered this pair for me from the Alden warehouse directly. I'm not sure if there are other pairs floating around, but SF might have it.

That's good to know.  May I ask how long you waited?

I didn't have to wait, as the 8C was at the Alden warehouse already. I'm located less than 50 miles from Alden's warehouse, so I got them the next day after Kathy ordered them for me. I'm not sure how many more pairs of 8C there are floating out there but I suspect SF has at least one or two pairs.

I was asked about how I keep track of my shoes... Here is a snippet of my spreadsheet.

I try and keep track of many aspects of my shoes including number of wearings, last wear date, and wether or not they have been photographed...
